Microgravity reduces gravity-driven convection and sedimentation around a growing protein crystal. That can give some proteins a steadier environment in which to form larger, more uniform, or better-ordered crystals. If those crystals produce better X-ray diffraction data, researchers may be able to determine a protein’s structure more accurately and use it to guide drug research. The benefit is not guaranteed for every protein, and a space-grown crystal is a research tool—not proof that a medicine works.
What changes when a protein crystal grows in microgravity?
Protein crystallization is the process of arranging protein molecules from a solution into a regularly ordered solid. On Earth, gravity contributes to convection and sedimentation in the surrounding solution. Those movements can disturb the conditions around a growing crystal and contribute to uneven growth or defects.
In microgravity, those gravity-driven effects are reduced. NASA and the ISS National Laboratory describe the potential for slower, more orderly incorporation of molecules into a crystal, which may result in crystals that are larger, more uniform, or better ordered. These are possible advantages, not a dependable outcome: results vary with the protein and experimental setup.
Why reduced flow may help
A growing crystal takes up molecules from the liquid around it. When convection and sedimentation are reduced, the local environment can be less disturbed. That may allow a crystal to grow under steadier conditions. It does not mean gravity is the only factor affecting crystal quality; the particular protein and solution conditions still matter.

How crystal growth can contribute to drug discovery
The potential connection is a sequence of research steps, not a direct transformation from crystal to medicine:
- Grow a crystal: Researchers crystallize a protein of interest under defined conditions.
- Collect diffraction data: They measure how X-rays diffract through the crystal.
- Determine or refine the structure: The diffraction data are used to infer the protein’s three-dimensional structure.
- Apply the structural information: Researchers use what the structure reveals about the protein to study its function, investigate drug targets, or guide rational drug design.
Better-ordered crystals can support better diffraction data and, in turn, more accurate structural work. That can inform drug research; it does not by itself show that a compound is safe or effective, or that a treatment will succeed clinically.

Earth-grown and space-grown crystals: what is actually being compared?
“Space-grown” is not a quality ranking. The useful question is whether a particular protein, grown under a defined protocol, gains a measurable advantage that matters to the structural study. NASA’s discussion of crystallization also notes a flight case in which crystals were inferior in quality to ground-grown crystals despite being visually comparable.
| Comparison | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Crystal order and uniformity | Microgravity may allow some proteins to form larger, better-ordered, or more uniform crystals; this is a potential advantage, not a universal result. NASA and the ISS National Laboratory describe these possibilities. |
| Diffraction and structural detail | Better crystal order can improve diffraction data and support more accurate structure determination. NASA’s researcher guide explains this connection. |
| Growth rate | NASA describes slower, more orderly incorporation as a possible feature of microgravity crystal growth. A general rate or a guaranteed improvement is not established. |
| Reproducibility and practical effort | Results depend on the protein and experimental conditions. Launch, operation, and sample recovery are practical considerations identified in NASA’s technical review. |
| Overall outcome | There is no universal winner: NASA’s technical review describes a flight case with inferior, though visually comparable, crystals. |

A protein associated with Duchenne muscular dystrophy
NASA reported in 2023 that JAXA microgravity work on a protein associated with Duchenne muscular dystrophy helped reveal structural clues used in designing compounds, including TAS-205. The same NASA account said an early patient trial had been completed in 2017 and described a larger Phase 3 trial as having begun in December 2020, with an expected run through 2027. Those are milestones as reported in 2023, not confirmation of the trial’s status in 2026 or of a clinical benefit.

Crystalline suspensions of pembrolizumab
NASA reported that ISS National Laboratory-sponsored PCG-5 produced high-quality crystalline suspensions of pembrolizumab (Keytruda), with potential to support injection-based delivery. NASA’s 2023 account described follow-up PCG 20 research in 2022 as ongoing. This is formulation research; the cited account does not establish that the work produced a newly approved injection formulation.
These examples concern different uses of crystallization. In one, protein crystals help researchers study a target’s structure. In the other, researchers study crystals of a therapeutic antibody in connection with a possible delivery formulation. Neither use should be confused with a crystal-growth experiment proving a treatment’s effectiveness.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why microgravity is a tool, not a shortcut
- Outcomes are protein-specific: A protocol that helps one protein may not help another, and some flight crystals have performed worse than ground-grown ones.
- Visual appearance is not enough: A crystal that looks comparable may still differ in quality relevant to diffraction and structural analysis.
- Flight logistics matter: Launch, experiment operation, and recovery all affect whether a flight opportunity produces useful results.
- The research goal matters: Studying a protein target’s structure is different from investigating a therapeutic product’s formulation or delivery.
The scale of the work is substantial but should be read with its dates attached: NASA’s 2015 guide edition, posted in 2016, reported more than 500 crystallization investigations undertaken on the ISS. NASA’s 2023 article described more than 500 protein crystal growth experiments conducted on the station as of 2021. These are historical counts reported in different NASA publications, not a current 2026 total.

A separate NASA Technical Reports Server review describes a specific sounding-rocket experiment that provided six minutes of microgravity; its abstract reports crystals about 100 microns in length. That is an example from one historical experiment, not a general expectation for space-grown crystals.
