If you need a portable, reviewable place for business definitions and schema context, OKF may already be the right knowledge format. If your SQL agent needs governed metrics, reusable joins, or a controlled way to query business data, compare semantic-layer options such as dbt Semantic Layer, Cube, Malloy, and Snowflake Semantic Views. These solve different problems: you can keep knowledge in OKF, serve metrics from a semantic layer, and build the agent workflow with LangChain or LangGraph.
What does “alternative to OKF” mean for a SQL agent?
It depends on what you want to replace. The Open Knowledge Format specification, version 0.2, from the Google Cloud Platform repository describes OKF as “an open, human- and agent-friendly format for representing knowledge: the metadata, context, and curated insight that surrounds data and systems.” It organizes Markdown files with YAML frontmatter in a directory, aiming to keep the material portable, readable, parseable, and diffable.
That makes OKF a way to maintain contextual knowledge—such as business terminology, schema notes, lineage, and curated explanations—not a SQL query engine or a governed metric-serving service. A semantic layer, by contrast, defines metrics and their relationships so tools can query them consistently. An agent framework coordinates how an agent reasons, calls tools, and handles review; it does not automatically provide trusted business definitions.
- Keep OKF when the core need is a portable corpus that people can review and maintain.
- Choose a semantic modeling or serving system when the agent must query governed metrics and relationships.
- Add an agent framework when you need to build and control the workflow that uses those definitions or services.
These layers can be combined. “Alternative” does not have to mean replacing OKF with one product that does everything.

Which alternatives fit governed SQL metrics?
The options below address different architectures rather than forming a universal ranking. Product capabilities and deployment conditions are described in their respective official documentation; Cube’s comparative claims are vendor-authored and should be validated against your workload.
| Option | What it contributes | Access and operating considerations | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| dbt Semantic Layer / MetricFlow | Central metric definitions over dbt models, with automatic handling of joins. MetricFlow is the engine associated with metric definition and querying; the hosted dbt Semantic Layer is a distinct product surface. | dbt documents connections for AI tools, including Claude and ChatGPT through its MCP server, and says access permissions are supported. Defining and querying metrics through the hosted Semantic Layer requires a dbt Starter or Enterprise-tier account. Check the required account tier, supported connectors, permission model, and deployment path for the capabilities you need. | Teams whose transformations and business metrics already live in dbt and that want agents to use centralized definitions. |
| Cube Core | A decoupled semantic layer with measures, dimensions, joins, and access rules. Cube’s 2026 vendor material describes serving through SQL, REST, GraphQL, and MCP, as well as pre-aggregations and row-level security at query compilation. | Cube describes Cube Core as Apache 2.0 and says its open-source version includes a serving runtime. Self-hosting still means operating deployment, upgrades, monitoring, scaling, and pre-aggregation processes. Verify that authorization follows the requesting user through the actual query path. | Applications or agents that need governed metrics across multiple interfaces, rather than only one warehouse-native route. |
| Malloy / Malloy Publisher | Malloy is an open-source language for semantic data modeling and querying; its queries compile to SQL. Its documentation names BigQuery, Postgres, and Parquet/CSV through DuckDB as supported sources. Publisher can expose models through APIs and MCP. | The Publisher MCP guide says its endpoint requires no authentication and binds to 0.0.0.0 by default. For local use, bind locally; before broader exposure, put an authenticating gateway in front. MCP availability alone does not establish authorization. |
Teams that want a model-as-code query language and are prepared to operate Publisher and secure its network exposure. |
| Snowflake Semantic Views / Cortex Analyst | Snowflake describes Semantic Views as a way to improve SQL generation for Cortex Agents. The Cortex Analyst API can generate SQL from a natural-language question using a supplied semantic model or semantic view. | This is a Snowflake-centered path. The cited Snowflake documentation does not establish Semantic Views as a portable replacement across warehouses. | Teams already centered on Snowflake that want semantic context for Snowflake agent workflows. |
When should you use LangChain or LangGraph?
Use LangChain or LangGraph to build the agent workflow, not as a substitute for a semantic layer. LangChain’s learning documentation includes a SQL-agent tutorial with human-in-the-loop review and a custom SQL-agent tutorial implemented directly in LangGraph. It also presents LangGraph as an option when deeper customization is required.

The workflow framework can determine when to ask for approval, which tools the agent may call, and how it handles results. The business definitions and query controls still need to come from a maintained knowledge source, a semantic layer, or the data platform. For example, an agent could retrieve explanatory notes from OKF while using dbt metrics or a Cube model for governed metric queries.
How should you choose a knowledge layer for your SQL agent?
- Decide what you are modeling. Use a file-based knowledge format for contextual notes and curated knowledge; use a semantic model or metric layer for reusable metrics, joins, and queryable business concepts. If you need both, plan for both.
- Trace the agent’s access path. Identify whether it reads files, calls MCP, queries SQL, uses REST or GraphQL, or calls a platform-specific API. Confirm that the chosen path supports the actual agent and deployment you intend to use.
- Test authorization as the user. Check where permissions are enforced and whether they apply to the requesting user’s query. Do not treat the presence of a semantic model, MCP endpoint, or agent framework as proof that access is restricted correctly. Malloy Publisher’s documented unauthenticated default is a particularly important deployment check.
- Check portability and platform fit. Verify supported warehouses and data sources, how much of the model can move with you, and whether the route ties the agent to a particular vendor platform. Malloy documents several sources; Snowflake Semantic Views are positioned for Snowflake.
- Account for operations and access requirements. Confirm account tier and connectors for dbt’s hosted Semantic Layer. For self-hosted Cube, include deployment, upgrades, monitoring, scaling, and pre-aggregation operations. For Malloy Publisher, include network exposure and an authentication gateway where needed.
- Evaluate answers against known cases. Use representative business questions with known results, expected access rules, and a way to trace each answer to its metric definition or source. The reviewed product material does not establish a comparable benchmark that identifies a universally most accurate option; accuracy needs to be evaluated for your own model, data, permissions, and questions.
Can an SQL agent use dbt metrics or a semantic model through MCP?
Yes, where the selected product and deployment support that route. dbt documents connecting AI tools, including Claude and ChatGPT, through its MCP server. Cube’s vendor material describes MCP among its serving interfaces, and Malloy Publisher can expose models through MCP. Those capabilities describe ways to connect; they do not by themselves guarantee that a particular agent can use a given model securely or that the answer is correct.
