To clean a washing machine drain pump filter, first confirm your model has a user-serviceable filter, then switch off and unplug the washer, drain trapped water, remove and gently clean the filter, and refit it securely. Filter location, drainage method and recommended cleaning interval vary by model, so use the washer’s owner’s manual for the exact instructions.
Before you start: confirm your washer has a cleanable filter
Drain-pump filters are not fitted or accessed the same way on every washer. Check the model number and owner’s manual before opening a panel. LG says its drain-pump filter is present on its front-load washers and combo units, but not its top-load washers; other makes and models may differ. Whirlpool also notes that access instructions depend on the model.
Find the machine’s exact cleaning procedure in its manual or manufacturer support page. Check specifically where the service panel is, how to release residual water, how the filter turns or unlocks, and whether the manufacturer requires a leak or water-tightness check afterward.
What you’ll need
- A shallow, broad pan to catch residual water, plus towels.
- A soft-bristle brush for gently cleaning the filter.
- The owner’s manual for your washer model.
A special washer-branded tool is not required by the manufacturer instructions cited here. Do not use tools to force a stuck filter.

How to clean the drain pump filter
- Finish the cycle, switch off and unplug the washer. Empty the drum and cancel or complete the cycle if possible. Follow the manual’s safety directions; LG warns of electric-shock risk if the washer is not unplugged before this procedure. If water in the machine may be hot, let it cool before draining. - Prepare to catch the water. Put the pan and towels below the filter service area. Residual water can spill when the filter is opened, even if the washer appears empty.
- Open the model’s service panel and drain the remaining water. On the LG models covered by its support instructions, the panel is low on the front, though its position can vary. If your washer has a small drain hose, carefully pull it toward the pan, remove its plug and let the water run out. Do not pull the hose so far that it kinks. If your machine has no small hose, use the manual’s specified drainage method rather than assuming the filter can be opened safely without draining.
- Remove the filter after the water has drained. LG and Samsung describe turning the filter counterclockwise on the models covered by their instructions. Your model may use a different design. Remove lint and objects, then rinse and brush the filter gently with warm water and a soft-bristle brush. Clean only the accessible surfaces identified in your manual.
- Inspect only accessible pump areas. Samsung advises checking the accessible pump-impeller area for debris. Do not reach into inaccessible components. Bosch advises contacting customer service if the impeller cannot turn; do not force it.
- Refit the filter and drain hose. Install the filter as the manual directs, turning it clockwise where that applies, until securely seated. Refit the drain-hose plug, return the hose to its holder and close the service panel. LG warns that incorrect or missing reassembly can cause leaks or malfunction.
- Perform any model-specific leak check. Follow the washer manual for the required post-cleaning check. For example, Whirlpool’s compact front-load washer instructions say to open the filter slowly to drain in stages and then check water tightness by pouring about one liter of water through the detergent dispenser. That instruction is specific to the Whirlpool compact front-load family; do not apply it to another washer unless its manual calls for it. See Whirlpool’s compact front-load filter instructions.
How often should you clean it?
Use the interval for your exact washer rather than treating one manufacturer’s schedule as universal. LG recommends monthly drain-filter cleaning for the front-load and combo units covered by its guidance. Whirlpool’s all-in-one washer-dryer guidance specifies cleaning every six months. Those recommendations apply to the product families described by each manufacturer, not automatically to all washers.
LG also advises checking periodically, especially if drainage is slow or an OE error appears. Samsung discusses pump-filter cleaning in troubleshooting for poor spinning. These symptoms can justify checking the filter and manual, but they do not prove that a dirty filter is the only cause.

If the washer still does not drain properly
- Check the drain hose and the model’s error-code guidance; a filter clean may not resolve every drainage problem.
- If water leaks after cleaning, switch off the washer and recheck that the filter and drain-hose plug are seated as the manual specifies.
- If the filter will not loosen, do not force it. Consult the manual or contact the manufacturer’s service team.
- If the accessible pump impeller cannot turn, Bosch recommends contacting customer service.
