If Windows says “Startup Repair couldn’t repair your PC” and points to WindowsSystem32LogfilesSrtSrtTrail.txt, that path identifies a diagnostic log—not one specific fault, and not proof your personal files are gone. Start in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), try the built-in repair options, and choose later steps based on what changed before the failure. Back up important files if you can before attempting a reset or reinstall.
What the SrtTrail.txt error means
Windows attempted Automatic Repair, but the attempt did not get the PC starting again. The SrtTrail.txt file records diagnostic details about that attempt. The filename alone does not tell you whether the cause is damaged system files, boot configuration, a recent update, a file-system problem, or something else. Startup Repair addresses some common startup problems, but it cannot fix every cause. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair guidance and Windows startup troubleshooting guidance.
This guide prioritizes steps that do not intentionally erase personal files. No recovery option can guarantee that files are safe in every situation, particularly if the storage device is failing or Windows is encrypted and the recovery key is unavailable.
Open Windows Recovery Environment without booting Windows
If the blue recovery screen is already open, choose Advanced options. If Windows still starts intermittently, you can reach WinRE from Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, or hold Shift while selecting Restart. Microsoft also documents triggering Automatic Repair by interrupting normal startup twice. A recovery drive or Windows installation media can provide another route. See Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment overview.
#1 Best Overall

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the computer does not reach WinRE, use a working PC to create Windows installation media on a USB drive. Start the affected PC from that drive, then choose Repair my PC rather than installing Windows. The way to select a USB boot device differs by computer; follow the device manufacturer’s instructions. The USB is a way to reach recovery tools, not a repair by itself. Microsoft describes the process in its installation-media instructions.
Some WinRE tools may ask for the BitLocker recovery key. If prompted, retrieve the key associated with the encrypted device before proceeding; do not bypass encryption or guess at the key. WinRE’s available tools include Startup Repair, Command Prompt, update removal, System Restore, and reset options, as described in Microsoft’s WinRE guide.

Try Startup Repair once, then choose a targeted next step
- From WinRE, open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted and let the tool complete its diagnosis and repair attempt.
- If Windows still will not start and Startup Repair reports that it could not repair the PC, move to the option that matches what happened before the failure. Repeating the same failed attempt is not a guaranteed fix.
Startup Repair automatically checks for and attempts to fix certain common startup problems. It is a reasonable first step because it does not ask you to remove personal files. Its scope and limitations are summarized in Microsoft’s Startup Repair documentation.
Choose the next recovery step based on what changed
If the problem started after a Windows update
In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, then select the available update-removal option that fits the timing of the issue. Microsoft says removing a selected update keeps personal files and apps, although some updates cannot be uninstalled. Do not use update removal as a general fix if the boot problem did not follow an update. Details are in Microsoft’s recovery options guide.

If a restore point is available
Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore and select a restore point from before the startup problem began. System Restore keeps personal files, but rolls back system files and settings to that point; apps, drivers, updates, and settings added afterward may be affected. You need an available restore point, and a device may request its BitLocker recovery key. Microsoft explains the effects of this option in its recovery options documentation.
If you suspect disk or protected system-file problems
WinRE Command Prompt can run disk and offline system-file checks, but first identify the actual Windows volume. Its drive letter may differ from the one Windows normally uses. Microsoft’s WinRE troubleshooting procedure checks the Windows Boot Loader’s osdevice value in BCDEdit, then shows CHKDSK and offline SFC examples. That procedure is documented for Windows Server, so treat its commands as scoped examples—not a universal consumer-Windows repair prescription. See Microsoft Learn’s WinRE startup troubleshooting procedure.

- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
- Run
bcdeditand find the Windows Boot Loader entry. Note the drive shown forosdevice. - Substitute that identified drive letter for
D:in commands only when following an applicable procedure. Microsoft’s example commands areCHKDSK /f D:andSFC /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:windows.
Do not assume D: is correct on your PC, and do not paste DISM /Online into WinRE: it targets a running Windows installation, not the offline installation in recovery. Microsoft’s consumer instructions for DISM followed by SFC are for an elevated, running Windows session; see the System File Checker guidance. The separate WinRE page’s DISM offline instructions are scoped to Windows Server 2012 and later.
If the log mentions registry problems
Do not blindly copy old files from the RegBack folder as a standard repair. Microsoft says automatic registry backups to RegBack stopped beginning with Windows 10 version 1803; its client boot troubleshooting guidance recommends using a restore point for a corrupt registry hive when one is available. See Microsoft’s Windows startup troubleshooting page.

Understand the file impact before reset, reinstall, or image restore
Before a reset or reinstall, back up important files if you can access them. Microsoft warns that recovery choices can cause data loss. The options differ in whether they preserve personal files and what they change:
| Option | Can you use it from WinRE? | Personal files and other changes | Key condition or risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall Updates | Yes | Microsoft says selected update removal keeps personal files and apps. | Some updates cannot be uninstalled; most relevant when the failure followed an update. |
| System Restore | Yes | Keeps personal files; rolls back system files and settings. Later apps, drivers, updates, and settings may be affected. | Requires an available restore point; may require the BitLocker recovery key. |
| Reset this PC — Keep my files | Yes | Offers to keep personal files, but removes apps and settings. | Read the choices shown on screen and back up first; it is not a guarantee against all data loss. |
| Reset this PC — Remove everything | Yes | Removes personal files, apps, and settings. | Do not choose this when preserving files is the priority. |
| Reinstall Windows | Using installation media | Impact depends on the installation choices; a clean installation can remove files, apps, and settings. | Back up first and review the installer’s selected drive and partition carefully. |
| System-image restore | Yes, if a suitable image is available | Restores the image and replaces current programs, settings, and files. | Use only if you intend to restore the computer to the image’s state. |
Microsoft’s recovery options page describes reset and restore effects. Its WinRE troubleshooting features documentation explains that a system-image restore replaces current programs, settings, and files. Choose reset, reinstall, or image restore only after checking the exact option presented on your screen and considering whether you have a backup.
When to stop and protect the drive
- If Command Prompt or recovery tools cannot consistently read the Windows volume, the storage device may need diagnosis before more repair attempts. Avoid repeated write-heavy repairs when you have irreplaceable files and no backup.
- If the Windows installation is encrypted and you cannot obtain the BitLocker recovery key, stop before taking steps that require access to the volume.
- If an option warns that files will be removed or the selected disk may be erased, cancel until you have verified the backup and the target drive.
For Windows 10 users, Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. That affects the security-support context, not the immediate meaning of SrtTrail.txt; see the Windows recovery environment page for Microsoft’s support-status note.
