To make Excel capitalize text while you type, open File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options and select the capitalization rules you want. Excel can capitalize the first letter of sentences and days, correct two initial capitals, and fix accidental Caps Lock use. These are specific corrections—not a setting that turns every word into title case or every entry into uppercase.
Turn on Excel’s capitalization rules while typing
In Windows desktop Excel, open the AutoCorrect settings and choose the rules that fit your needs:
- Select File > Options.
- Choose Proofing, then select AutoCorrect Options.
- On the AutoCorrect tab, select the capitalization options you want, such as Capitalize first letter of sentences.
- Select OK to apply the changes.
Microsoft documents these controls for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, Excel 2021, Excel 2019, and Excel 2016. The available options include correcting two initial capitals, capitalizing the first letter of sentences, capitalizing names of days, and correcting accidental Caps Lock use. See Microsoft’s AutoCorrect guide. Menus and feature availability can differ outside Windows desktop Excel, so check your platform’s Excel preferences if these steps do not match.
What Excel will—and will not—capitalize automatically
These options correct common typing situations. For example, enabling sentence capitalization can change the first letter after a sentence-ending mark. They do not automatically capitalize the first letter of every word you enter, convert every entry to uppercase, or apply title case to all cells.

If you repeatedly type a particular term or abbreviation and want Excel to replace it with a specific capitalization, use the Replace and With fields on the AutoCorrect tab to add a text substitution. Make sure Replace text as you type is selected if a mapping is not being applied. This handles a defined trigger and replacement; it is not a general case-conversion mode.
Prevent unwanted capitalization changes
If Excel changes a word you need to keep as typed, press Ctrl+Z to undo the correction. For recurring exceptions, select Exceptions in the AutoCorrect dialog. Microsoft documents an Initial CAps list for terms with intentional mixed capitalization, such as “IDs,” and a First Letter list for words after abbreviations that should not trigger sentence-start capitalization. The available controls are described in Microsoft’s AutoCorrect guide.

Change capitalization in text already in cells
For existing cell contents, use a formula in a helper column rather than AutoCorrect. Microsoft documents three case-conversion functions:
| Goal | Formula example | Result for “excel tips” |
|---|---|---|
| Capitalize the first letter of each word | =PROPER(A2) |
Excel Tips |
| Convert all letters to uppercase | =UPPER(A2) |
EXCEL TIPS |
| Convert all letters to lowercase | =LOWER(A2) |
excel tips |
Enter the formula in a blank cell beside the original, then fill it down for the rows you need. If you want to replace the original text, review the results first, copy the converted cells, and paste them as values over the source. PROPER uppercases the first letter of each word-like segment and lowercases the remaining letters, so it may change acronyms, brand styling, or mixed-case identifiers. See Microsoft’s documentation for UPPER, LOWER, and PROPER.
