For a Galaxy phone you expect to replace with another Galaxy, Samsung Cloud is the more tailored option for Samsung settings and services. If you want a Google Account-based backup that can restore to the original phone or some other Android phones, use Android backup by Google. Google One is not a separate backup engine: Android backup works with a Google Account, and Google One provides additional account storage when needed. The services overlap, but neither guarantees that every app’s private data will be restored.
How Samsung Cloud and Google backup differ
Think of Samsung Cloud as the Galaxy-focused path and Google backup as the Google Account-based Android path. Both can save common phone data, but their documented categories, restore targets, and related sync features are not identical.

What Samsung Cloud backs up—and what it syncs
Samsung lists device-backup categories such as call and message history, contacts and calendar data saved on the phone, alarms and timers, selected device settings, home-screen layout, certain wallpapers, apps and Samsung app settings, and Voice Recorder recordings. Supported items can vary by phone and operating system, so the categories shown in your device’s Samsung Cloud settings are the practical guide. See Samsung’s backup and restore instructions.

Samsung separately describes syncing supported Samsung-account data, including Calendar and Contacts, Samsung Browser, Samsung Notes, Samsung Health, Samsung Pass, Gallery, Reminder, Galaxy Avatar, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. A sync category should not be assumed to be part of the device backup: these are different feature paths and can have different availability. See Samsung Cloud’s overview.
Samsung Cloud exclusions and regional limits
Samsung’s support documentation excludes synchronized contacts and calendar events from device-backup categories. It also identifies unsupported installation files, certain large, failed, draft, or emergency messages, Galaxy Themes and basic wallpapers, and Secure Folder apps and data among exclusions. Review the current list and selected items on your own phone rather than treating “Samsung Cloud backup” as a complete copy of the device.

Samsung Australia’s support page says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud and warns that using mobile data rather than Wi-Fi may incur charges. Those statements are specific to that support page; Samsung says service availability and supported items can vary by country and carrier as well as model and operating system. What Google Android backup covers
Google says Android backup can save apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS messages to a Google Account. Google Messages can provide an additional path for RCS messages; Phone by Google can back up call settings and blocked numbers; and Google Photos handles pictures and videos through its own service. These app-specific paths are not a promise that every listed item is contained in the same device-backup record.

Google cautions that not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data. Confirm the important apps’ own backup or sync status before relying on a phone-level backup. Google says a backup can take up to 24 hours; in Android settings, a completed backup is shown as “On” under the selected data types. For details, see Google’s Android backup guide.
Google One and the 15 GB allowance
You can turn on Android backup with a Google Account without buying Google One, subject to the account’s available storage. Google states that each account has 15 GB at no charge and identifies Google One as the way to get more. That 15 GB is Google Account storage—not a separate 15 GB allowance exclusively for phone backup. Check account storage before deciding whether you need more. Google Android Help.

Restoring a backup or moving to a new phone
Restore with Samsung Cloud
Samsung’s restore flow lets you open Restore data, choose an available backup, and select data to restore. Samsung describes using it after a factory reset or while setting up another Galaxy device. This is the better fit when your destination is a Galaxy and the Samsung-specific items you need are supported. Follow Samsung’s device-specific instructions and check the destination phone’s available categories.
Restore with Google
Google says a backup can be restored to the original phone or some other Android phones. Restoring the non-photo/video backup takes place during initial setup or after a factory reset; photos and videos already backed up to Google Photos can be accessed there. Google warns that a phone running an older Android version than the previous device may receive an incomplete transfer. A restore can take up to 24 hours to finish. Direct transfer is not the same as cloud backup
Google Play services also supports a direct cable or Wi-Fi transfer between phones; Google identifies some transfer functionality as available on Android 9 and later. That can help during a move, but it is a one-time migration path, not proof that an ongoing cloud backup is current. Confirm the backup separately before erasing or trading in the old phone. Google says backup data is encrypted in transit and that some data receives additional end-to-end encryption using the device’s screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. Google lists exceptions: Google Photos photos and videos and carrier-received MMS media are not covered by that screen-lock encryption statement. Google Android Help.
The Samsung support pages cited here describe backup categories, availability, and restore steps, but do not provide a directly comparable encryption description. They therefore do not establish that either service is more secure than the other. For sensitive data, check current security information for the specific service, account, device, and region you use.

Which service should you use?
- You plan to stay with Galaxy: Start with Samsung Cloud if Samsung settings, home layout, Samsung app settings, or Samsung-service continuity are important. Check the device’s actual backup categories and exclusions.
- You may switch to another Android brand: Keep Google Android backup enabled as a Google Account-based recovery path. Check app-specific backup behavior and the destination phone’s Android version.
- You rely on Google Photos or Google Messages: Verify those apps’ own backup or sync status in addition to the phone’s Android backup status.
- You need a local copy or transfer option: Samsung documents Smart Switch backup and restore with external USB storage, including USB OTG flash drives or SSDs, on compatible Galaxy devices. Port support and an adapter may be required. This is supplementary local storage, not a cloud service. Samsung Smart Switch external-storage support.
- Your Google storage is nearly full: Check account storage first. Google One provides additional storage, but the cited guidance does not establish current plan prices or amounts.
Checks to make before you depend on a backup
- Open the phone’s backup settings and inspect the last successful backup and the categories selected. For Google, Google says “On” appears beneath backed-up data types when the backup is complete; it may take up to 24 hours.
- Confirm that the phone is backing up to the Google or Samsung account you will use on the replacement device.
- Check where photos, videos, and messages are actually protected. Google Photos and Google Messages may have separate settings, and Samsung Cloud sync is distinct from device backup.
- Check the destination phone’s Android version and the restore flow before wiping or trading in the old phone.
- On a Galaxy, inspect Samsung Cloud’s available categories and exclusions on that specific device; availability can vary by model, software, country, and carrier.
- For a Smart Switch local backup, confirm the phone supports the USB connection, determine whether an OTG adapter is needed, and check that the drive has enough free space.
