Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSet up a home security camera around a specific security need, then limit who can reach its live feed and recordings. Secure your router, replace default passwords, enable available encryption and two-factor authentication, keep the camera and app updated, and retain only the footage you need. Exact menus vary by model, so follow the camera maker’s current instructions for each setting.
1. Choose a view that serves a clear purpose
Decide what you need to monitor—for example, a doorway or a route into the property—and frame the camera as narrowly as that purpose allows. Avoid bedrooms and other private interior spaces where possible. A camera’s field of view matters especially if you enable remote viewing: anyone with authorized access may be able to see what the camera captures.
There is no universal mounting height or angle for every home. Adjust the view in the manufacturer’s app or instructions, and check the resulting image rather than assuming the camera points only where intended.
2. Secure the router and Wi-Fi
A camera is part of your home network, so strengthen the router before relying on the camera’s privacy settings. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends changing the router’s default administrator credentials, enabling its firewall, installing updates, and using WPA2 or WPA3 Wi-Fi encryption. See the FTC’s connected-device security guidance and camera security guidance.

- Use a unique router administrator password; do not reuse the camera password.
- Check for router firmware updates and install them.
- Consider connecting cameras and other internet-connected devices to a separate guest or segmented network. This can reduce the chance that a compromised computer or other device provides an easy path to the cameras.
Router menus and the behavior of guest or segmented networks differ. Consult your router’s documentation to confirm that devices on the separate network are isolated as you expect.
3. Lock down the camera account and device
- Connect it using the current manufacturer instructions. App names, account steps, and menus vary by camera.
- Replace default credentials. Set a strong, unique password for the camera and its associated account; do not use a password used elsewhere.
- Enable available protections. Turn on encryption and two-factor authentication (also called multifactor authentication) for the camera or cloud account if offered.
- Keep software current. Enable automatic updates if available, or check regularly for camera firmware and viewing-app updates.
- Turn off unused management features. Disable remote-management features you do not need.
The FTC’s camera guidance covers passwords, encryption, updates, and access controls. The exact features available depend on the camera and service.

4. Decide whether to enable remote viewing or audio
Remote viewing
Remote viewing lets you check a camera feed away from home, but it also creates another route to the video. Before enabling it, consider whether you need the feature and whether the camera shows a private area. If you use it, confirm that login and video-feed connections are encrypted, and limit access to trusted accounts and devices. Disable remote viewing if the camera supports it and you do not need it. The FTC warns that an unsecured video feed could let someone else watch it; read its guidance on securing home security cameras.
Audio
Consider switching off audio recording if it is not needed for the camera’s security purpose. Audio can raise separate privacy and legal questions. Rules depend on location and circumstances, so check applicable local requirements before recording other people; no single legal rule applies everywhere.

5. Limit sharing and manage recordings
Give access only to people who need it
Invite only necessary viewers. If the camera offers role-based permissions, keep administrative control with the owner and give other people only the access they need. Use controls that limit who can watch, when they can watch, or whether they can change settings. Remove access when it is no longer needed. These options vary by camera, as the FTC notes in its camera guidance.
Know where footage goes and when it is deleted
Check whether recordings are stored locally, in the cloud, or both. Before choosing a service, review the manufacturer’s stated practices for collecting, sharing, retaining, and deleting footage, along with its security-update support. Neither local nor cloud storage is inherently safer in every case; the choice depends on the system and your needs.
