Microsoft documents the underlying Windows API’s cascade behavior, but its current Windows 11 taskbar guidance does not list the legacy “Cascade windows” command. If you want to arrange windows in Windows 11, Snap is the built-in option for structured layouts; Task View and multiple desktops help separate groups of apps.
What happens when you cascade windows?
A cascade is an overlapping arrangement: windows are shifted behind one another rather than placed in separate, non-overlapping areas. Exposed edges and title bars help you spot and select a particular window while keeping several open windows on screen. Microsoft’s CascadeWindows function documentation describes an API for cascading specified child windows. It explains the operation’s technical behavior, not a Windows 11 taskbar command or a user-facing control.
Does Windows 11 have a “Cascade windows” command?
Microsoft’s current Windows 11 taskbar guidance describes taskbar settings and Task View but does not list a “Cascade windows” action in the taskbar menu. That is a statement about the guidance reviewed, not proof that every Windows 11 build, application, or third-party utility lacks an equivalent. No direct interface test is established here, so availability can vary beyond what Microsoft’s documentation confirms.

How to arrange windows with Snap
- Choose the window you want to place. Drag it to a screen edge or corner, or select a layout from Snap’s available layouts.
- When Windows displays Snap Assist with your other open windows, select one to fill another part of the layout. Microsoft describes Snap and Snap Assist in its Snap Your Windows guide.
The result is a structured, edge-aligned layout, not a stack of overlapping windows.

How to separate work with Task View and desktops
If the goal is to keep one project’s apps apart from another’s, use Task View to create or switch between desktops. Microsoft describes desktops as separate work areas and documents access through Task View and keyboard shortcuts in its multiple desktops guide. Its multitasking guide also covers built-in ways to work with open windows. Desktops separate workspaces; they do not cascade windows on the same desktop.

- See several windows at once in an overlapping stack: Cascade describes that visual arrangement, but it is not listed as a command in the current Windows 11 taskbar guidance cited above.
- View windows together in a tidy layout: Use Snap and, when offered, Snap Assist.
- Keep app groups for different tasks apart: Use Task View and multiple desktops.
Snap and multiple desktops are built into Windows. They are different ways to organize work, not substitutes that reproduce the cascade’s overlapping layout.
