Use an angle grinder safely by matching the wheel and guard to the tool and job, checking the wheel for damage, securing the workpiece, and controlling sparks and dust before you switch on. Wear suitable protection, operate the grinder with two hands, and use a cutting disc only for cutting—not for grinding.
Before you start: match the grinder, wheel, and guard
Check the grinder’s manual and the wheel’s markings before fitting an accessory. Confirm that the wheel is intended for the material and operation, fits the grinder’s diameter and arbor, and has a maximum speed rating at least as high as the grinder’s rated speed. The OSHA-hosted angle grinder safety talk states: “The RPM rating of the disc/blade must be higher than that of the angle grinder.” Follow the tool and accessory manufacturers’ instructions for the specific model and wheel.
- Cutting disc: Use it for cutting only. The OSHA-hosted safety talk, which identifies the Grain Handling Safety Coalition, says, “A cutting disc should not be used for grinding.”
- Grinding wheel: Use a wheel designed for grinding and the intended material. Do not use the edge of a cutting disc to grind.
- Guard: Fit the correct guard securely and position it as the grinder manufacturer directs. Do not operate with a loose or missing guard. Some cutting wheels require a closed, two-sided cutting-wheel guard; check the manual for your model and wheel.
These directions are not interchangeable across grinders. For example, DEWALT’s manuals specify guard and wheel-use requirements for the particular tools they cover. One DEWALT manual warns against using edge grinding/cutting wheels for surface grinding because they are not designed for the side pressure involved.
Inspect and prepare the work area
Check the wheel and tool
Before installation, inspect the wheel for cracks, defects, and excessive wear. Do not use a damaged or questionable wheel. Check that the accessory is installed and secured according to the manual, and that the guard is firmly attached and positioned to deflect debris away from you.

Secure the material and clear hazards
Clamp or otherwise secure the workpiece so it cannot move while being cut or ground. Make sure you have stable footing and enough room to control the tool without reaching awkwardly. Identify where sparks and debris will travel, and move flammable materials out of that path. Consider combustible dust, nearby people, and any hot-work permit or site procedure that applies. Do not begin until the work area and its fire controls are suitable for the task.
Choose protection for the hazards
Wear eye protection and hearing protection. Add respiratory protection when the work creates dust or fumes that require it; select protection appropriate to the material and the worksite’s hazard controls. Angle grinders can also expose users to flying particles, noise, electrical shock, cuts, and ergonomic strain, so inspect the tool and its cord or power supply and keep hands and body clear of the wheel’s path.

In US workplaces, OSHA’s general-industry rule for right-angle portable grinders, 29 CFR 1910.243(c)(3), limits wheel exposure to a maximum of 180 degrees and requires the guard to be between the operator and the wheel during use; the guard should be adjusted to deflect fragments from an accidentally broken wheel away from the operator. Construction workplaces are covered by different provisions: see 29 CFR 1926.303 for abrasive-wheel guarding and 29 CFR 1926.300(c) for protective equipment where workers face flying objects or harmful dusts, fumes, mists, vapors, or gases. These are US workplace rules, not universal requirements; follow the rules that apply where you work.
How to cut with an angle grinder
- Fit a cutting wheel approved for the tool, material, and cut, and install the guard required by the manual.
- Secure the workpiece and position yourself so you can hold the grinder steadily with both hands without standing in the likely path of sparks or fragments.
- Switch on the grinder and let it reach full speed before bringing the wheel to the work.
- Keep the wheel aligned with the cut and use light, steady pressure. Avoid bending or twisting the cutting wheel; side pressure can damage a wheel not designed for it.
- When the cut is complete, remove the wheel from the work before switching off. Keep holding the tool until the wheel has stopped completely, then set it down.
Manufacturer instructions govern the details. For the models covered by one DEWALT manual, the directions include reaching full speed before contact, using minimum pressure, maintaining the cutting-wheel angle to avoid bending, removing the tool from the work before switching off, and waiting for rotation to stop before setting it down.

How to grind with an angle grinder
- Install a grinding wheel approved for the grinder and the material, and use the grinding guard specified in the manual.
- Secure the workpiece, establish stable footing, and hold the grinder with both hands.
- Start the grinder and let it reach full speed before contact. Apply light pressure and keep control of the tool rather than forcing it through the material.
- Use the wheel’s intended grinding surface and technique. Do not use a cutting disc for grinding or apply side pressure to a wheel that is not designed for it.
- Lift the wheel clear before switching off. Wait until it has stopped fully before setting the grinder down.
Stop if control or safety is compromised
Release the work only after the grinder has stopped. If the wheel binds, the tool becomes difficult to control, or the workpiece shifts, stop and reassess rather than forcing the cut or grind. Disconnect power before inspecting or changing an accessory, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for resolving a problem. If sparks, dust, or fumes cannot be kept within the work area’s controls, stop and correct the setup before continuing.
