Disabling clip recording is not necessarily the same as disabling motion detection, live streaming, or cloud services. A privacy mode may turn off alerts as well as recording.
Can a security camera send motion alerts without recording?
Yes, some cameras can notify you about motion without saving an event clip. The clearest documented example is Kasa: TP-Link says users with local storage or without Kasa Care can still receive activity notifications, but will not have a recording to review in Activity Center. That describes alerts without an Activity Center clip; it does not establish that every kind of image capture or processing is absent. See TP-Link’s Kasa FAQ.
Behavior differs across products. Apple documents activity notifications for compatible cameras and separate recording controls for HomeKit Secure Video, but does not guarantee that every camera will send alerts under every recording configuration. Google likewise treats alerts and video history as related but distinct features; video history and storage depend on the camera model and subscription. Consult the documentation for the exact camera and app before relying on a particular combination.
Can I turn off recording but keep motion notifications?
Look for separate controls for motion detection, event recording, storage, and notifications. If the app lets you disable event clips while leaving motion detection and alerts enabled, notifications may continue without a saved clip. Do not assume that a setting labeled “recording off” has the same effect across brands.

Privacy or off modes are different. TP-Link says Tapo Privacy Mode disables video and audio streaming and recording, and event notifications are unavailable while it is active. It is therefore not a reliable way to keep motion alerts while stopping recording. Check the documentation for your device’s specific mode: TP-Link’s Tapo Privacy Mode FAQ.
Does no saved clip mean no image was captured or sent?
No. The absence of a clip in the camera’s history does not prove that no image was captured, processed, transmitted, or shown in the alert. A push notification might include a thumbnail or snapshot, and live streaming or cloud processing may be controlled separately from saved event video.

For example, Apple describes analysis and encrypted upload for HomeKit Secure Video, while TP-Link documents cloud-dependent services and snapshot rich notifications for Tapo with a subscription. These are product-specific details, not a rule for all cameras. Check whether your particular model’s push alerts, email alerts, or previews contain images, and review its settings for streaming, snapshots, cloud history, and data handling. Will alerts work without internet or a subscription?
There is no universal answer. TP-Link says Kasa motion detection and other TP-Link cloud services do not work without internet access. Its documented example of notifications without an Activity Center clip applies when local storage is used or Kasa Care is absent; that does not mean the same setup works offline. Google says video-history and storage capabilities vary by camera model and subscription. Check the requirements for the exact camera and alert feature rather than inferring them from whether clips are saved.

How to check your camera’s settings
- Identify the exact setup. Note the camera model, app, region, firmware if shown, and whether a cloud plan or local storage is active.
- Inspect controls separately. In the camera app, check event recording, local storage, cloud history, motion detection, and notification settings. Do not treat a privacy mode as equivalent to turning off clip storage.
- Check the alert format. Determine whether push or email notifications include a thumbnail, snapshot, or video preview. A missing clip in history does not answer that question.
- Try the configuration with a real motion event. Inspect the notification itself, then check local and cloud history to see whether a clip was saved. This verifies the behavior of your configured device; it does not establish that other models behave the same way.
- Check connectivity requirements. If detection or notifications rely on the vendor’s cloud, losing internet access may stop them.
When a camera is the wrong tool
If you want to know that someone moved without using a camera stream or capturing images, a standalone motion sensor is a more suitable category of device to consider. A camera’s recording controls do not by themselves establish that its sensing, image processing, or streaming has stopped.
