For most PC players who want the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign, the straightforward official choice is Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC). It includes a toggle between Anniversary remastered visuals and the original campaign’s graphics. If you want a substantial modern remake instead, Halo: Campaign Evolved is a separate PC release dated July 28, 2026, with rebuilt visuals, refined controls, added content, and up to four-player online co-op.

Play the familiar campaign with access to its original graphics Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in MCC Switch between Anniversary remastered graphics and graphics from the original campaign. This is still the Anniversary edition, not the original standalone 2001 PC release. Steam’s Anniversary listing describes the toggle.

Play the campaign with friends Either, depending on the version and group MCC offers online play but no PC split-screen, and its Campaign and Campaign Playlists cannot use cross-play. Campaign Evolved advertises up to four-player online co-op with crossplay.

What MCC’s Anniversary edition includes

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is the established official PC route for the original campaign. Its Steam listing describes 10 campaign missions and a switch between remastered visuals and graphics from the original campaign. The Anniversary release also lists customizable mouse-and-keyboard support, ultrawide support, adjustable field of view, and support for up to 4K UHD and 60+ FPS, depending on hardware. These features do not turn it into the original standalone 2001 PC release.

Anniversary is content within MCC rather than a self-contained Steam purchase: Steam states, “This content requires the base game Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Steam in order to play.” See the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Steam listing for the edition details.

How Campaign Evolved differs

Halo: Campaign Evolved is not another name for Anniversary. Its Steam listing gives a July 28, 2026 release date and describes a separate remake with updated visuals and cinematics, refined controls, additional weapons and content, and solo or up to four-player online co-op. The listing advertises crossplay and shared progression across console and PC, and says an Xbox Network account is required, with an option to link it to Steam. Confirm current account and online-service requirements in the listing before setting up a group.

Install and start the campaign

  1. Choose your route. For Anniversary, install MCC and its Halo: CE Anniversary content. For the remake, install Halo: Campaign Evolved separately.
  2. Launch MCC and select the campaign. In MCC, choose Campaigns, then Halo: CE Anniversary. Halo Support recommends this option for players following release order. Its guide recommends Easy or Normal for new players; you can select another campaign or difficulty if you prefer. See the MCC Campaign Guide.
  3. Start Campaign Evolved from Steam. Halo Support documents a potential issue if you run the executable directly from its installation folder: it may fail to connect to Steam, perform poorly, or freeze. The stated workaround is to open the Steam app and launch the game from your Steam library. This is a possible issue, not one that every player will encounter. See Halo Support’s PC guidance.

What to expect when playing co-op

MCC: online play, not PC split-screen

MCC PC players can play online with friends over Xbox network, but the official guide says split-screen is not available on PC. It also says Campaign and Campaign Playlists cannot use cross-play. Do not assume cross-play support in other MCC modes applies to the campaign. Check Halo Support’s MCC Campaign Guide for the campaign-specific details.

Campaign Evolved: up to four online players

The Campaign Evolved Steam listing advertises solo play or online co-op for up to four players, with crossplay and shared progression across console and PC. Those are listing features; check current account and service requirements before arranging a session.

Should you try the browser version?

A browser rendition of the original Xbox version was reported by PC Gamer on October 1, 2026. The report describes it as an unofficial project associated with developer Mitchell Hynes and built from decompilation work. It uses room links rather than matchmaking. PC Gamer also raised possible legal concerns, but its report does not establish a legal determination. Treat this as an experimental project, not an official or dependable substitute for MCC or Campaign Evolved. Read PC Gamer’s report.
