For the iPhone you rely on every day, install the stable public iOS release. Consider a beta only if you want to test pre-release software, can tolerate defects or changed behavior, and have a backup and a recovery plan—ideally on a non-critical device.
What is the difference between an iOS beta and a stable release?
A stable release is iOS that Apple has commercially released to customers. A beta is pre-release software made available for testing. Apple warns that beta software may contain errors or inaccuracies and may not work as well as commercially released software. That warning does not mean every beta will cause problems; it does mean you should not count on it behaving like a finished public release.
Apple’s public Beta Software Program gathers feedback from participants. Apple’s separate Developer Program is aimed at developers building and testing apps. Neither program guarantees a problem-free build.
| Decision factor | iOS beta | Stable public iOS |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use | Preview pre-release software, check app compatibility, and provide feedback. | Use the commercially released software. |
| Reliability expectation | Apple says it may contain errors and may not work as well as commercial software. | Commercially released, but not guaranteed to be bug-free. |
| Best fit | A tester or developer using a non-production, non-critical device. | A primary phone, business-critical phone, or device you depend on daily. |
| Before installing | Back up the device and read the notes for the specific build. | Check available release information and follow normal update preparation. |
| Going back | Turning off beta updates stops future beta delivery; returning to an earlier public version requires a restore. | No beta-specific rollback decision is needed unless you later install a beta. |
Should you install the beta on your main iPhone?
Usually, no. Apple advises installing beta software only on non-production devices that are not business-critical. That is especially relevant if your iPhone is your only phone, you need it for work, or you cannot set aside time to troubleshoot or restore it.

Choose stable if reliability matters more than early access
- Your phone is your primary or only device.
- You depend on it for work, travel, payments, authentication, or essential communication.
- You do not want to deal with unexpected behavior or app compatibility issues.
- You do not have a current backup and time to recover the device if needed.
A beta may suit a prepared tester
- You want to explore pre-release changes or test how your app works with a forthcoming iOS version.
- You can use a secondary, non-critical iPhone rather than the device you need every day.
- You are willing to report feedback and accept that the build may change or have defects.
- You understand how to restore the phone and have a backup that can be used with the iOS version you may return to.
A release candidate (RC) is still a beta-stage build. Apple describes it as typically the final beta before a major customer release; it is not the same as the public release and is not a guarantee that the software is free of problems.
How to prepare before installing an iOS beta
- Make a backup first. Apple says to back up devices before installing beta software. Use iCloud or a computer, and keep a pre-beta backup available in case you need to return to the earlier public iOS version. Apple’s guidance is at Installing and using Apple beta software.
- Read the release notes for the exact build. Apple’s notes describe that build’s changes, issues, fixes, and workarounds. Find them through Apple’s iOS and iPadOS release notes before installing.
- Check the specific device and release. Do not assume a beta listed by Apple is available for every iPhone. Confirm availability and compatibility in the device’s Software Update screen and the current release information.
- Decide whether you can afford a restore. If losing changes made after your pre-beta backup would be unacceptable, or you cannot take the phone out of service to restore it, stay on stable iOS.
Can you go back to stable iOS after installing a beta?
It depends what you mean by “go back.” You can stop receiving future beta updates, or you can restore the phone to an earlier public iOS version. Those are different actions: opting out does not downgrade the iOS version already installed.

Stop future beta updates
For devices running iOS 16.4 or later, beta delivery is controlled at Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates. Turning beta updates off stops future beta updates. You can then install the next commercial version when Apple releases it. This setting does not return the phone to an earlier public version.
Restore to an earlier public version
Returning to a prior public release requires a restore. Apple Support warns that a backup made while the device is running beta software will not work with an earlier iOS version. You may need to erase and restore the device using a compatible backup made before installing the beta. Changes made since that usable backup may not be recoverable through it.

Version numbers and device eligibility change over time. Apple’s beta program page may advertise a next iOS release without establishing the latest public stable version, current build number, or compatibility with a particular iPhone. Check Apple’s live release notes and your device’s Software Update screen when deciding what to install; this guide does not name a current build number.
