When an Eclipse DLTK editor feature stops working, first identify which layer is failing: the file-to-editor association, the project’s language tooling, an editor service such as Outline or content assist, or a separately configured validator or debugger. DLTK is a toolkit, not one uniform editor; the language component, project context, and installed releases determine what is available. Before applying a fix, note the language and file extension, Eclipse and DLTK versions, the exact symptom, whether it affects one file or a whole project, and any relevant Error Log entry.
Start by identifying what is failing
“The DLTK editor is broken” can describe several unrelated problems. Syntax coloring, the Outline view, completion proposals, validation markers, and debugging each follow a different path. A missing color does not by itself show that a validator is failing, and an empty Outline is not the same issue as a debugger that cannot connect.
- One file behaves differently: check its extension and which editor opens it.
- Every file in one project is affected: check the project’s language context and installed language component.
- Editor features work but error markers are missing: inspect validator configuration and its output.
- The issue began after an update or appears in a particular release: record the installed versions and compare the fix evidence with those exact releases.
Check that the intended language editor opens
If Eclipse opens a file in a plain text or unrelated editor, first check the file association rather than resetting all of DLTK. The Tcl help describes opening a Tcl file from Script Explorer; depending on preferences, a single or double click may open it. The editor can also be opened from Tcl elements in other views. Use the file’s Open With choice to select the intended editor, and confirm the relevant language plugin is installed. Confirm the project has the right language context
A correct editor association does not guarantee that project-level language tools are active. Eclipse’s Tcl/Xotcl overview describes contributions including a Tcl project nature and perspective, as well as views, editors, wizards, code-assistance tools, and a builder. If views or assistance are missing across a project, confirm that the appropriate language plugin is installed and enabled and that the project has the expected language context. Troubleshoot the specific editor feature
Syntax highlighting is missing
Verify first that the intended language editor is open and that the file is being treated as the expected language. If only one file is affected, compare its extension and editor choice with a file that works. If the issue occurs throughout a project, check plugin installation and project language context before treating it as a defect.
The Tcl Outline view is empty or stale
The documented Tcl Outline reflects the active compilation unit. Make sure the expected Tcl file is active in the editor and that it is being handled as Tcl. If the Outline fails for multiple files despite the correct editor and project context, capture the exact behavior and Error Log details; the cited documentation establishes the expected behavior, not a universal fix for every release.

Content assist does not offer proposals
Content or code assistance is an editor service, while some capabilities can also depend on project-level tooling. Check whether the problem is limited to one file or affects the whole project, and confirm that the language component and project context are active. The official feature description is Tcl-specific; it is not proof that another language’s component has identical behavior. Eclipse Tcl editor documentation
Debugging does not work
Debugging is listed among the Tcl editor’s features, but a failure to launch or connect is distinct from syntax coloring, Outline, and completion. Record the exact launch action and message and inspect the Error Log. The available documentation does not establish one general debugger fix across DLTK languages or releases.

When validation markers are missing, check the validator separately
For Tcl Checker, the legacy DLTK Validators guide gives the preference path Window > Preferences > DLTK > Validators. It calls for setting the checker binary path, working mode, and suppressed-problem list. The guide describes parsing checker output into Eclipse error and warning markers, so a checker that runs but emits output the integration does not recognize may still produce no expected markers. Keep validation diagnosis separate from editor diagnosis: a missing validation marker does not establish that syntax highlighting or content assist is broken. Likewise, working highlighting does not show that an external checker is configured correctly.

Check release information before applying an old fix
Release information is not aligned across the official project and downloads pages. The project page lists DLTK 6.4.2 dated 2025-09-10, while the downloads archive landing page surfaced release 6.2 dated 2020-05-02 and integration 6.3 dated 2020-06-11. Those listings alone do not establish the newest supported installation path. Record your Eclipse version, DLTK component version, language plugin, operating system, and installation source before changing versions or following an old compatibility workaround. Historical issue records are useful as examples of defect types, not as evidence that a current installation has the same bug. The DLTK 5.5 release review from 2016 lists fixes involving Ruby hover help and the Documentation view, a Ruby unit test runner incompatibility, and a ShellEd toggle-comment keybinding. Collect evidence before changing the installation
If the basic checks do not isolate the cause, gather details that distinguish a local configuration problem from a release-specific defect:
- Language and file extension.
- Eclipse version, DLTK component version, language plugin, operating system, and installation source.
- The exact failing feature and message, plus the steps that reproduce it.
- Whether the problem affects one file, one project, or the whole workspace.
- Relevant Error Log output, especially for failures after opening an editor, launching a tool, or updating the installation.
With that information, compare the failure against documentation or a release note for the same language component and version. Without a current compatibility matrix or a matching issue report, do not infer that a symptom is a known DLTK defect.
