You can use Android Auto with a foldable phone, but whether the phone’s apps behave as expected when it is closed or partly folded depends on the specific phone and app. First confirm that Android Auto connects to your car; then, while parked, test the closed, open, and half-folded positions separately. The Android Auto interface appears on the car’s display, while the foldable’s posture affects its own screen and app behavior.

Set up Android Auto before testing fold positions

Start with Google’s Android Auto setup instructions for your phone and vehicle. Check that both support the connection method you plan to use—wired or wireless—and follow the instructions for your car or head unit. For a wired connection, use a data-capable cable that fits the ports on your phone and vehicle; a cable can help establish a wired connection, but it does not guarantee that a foldable app or feature will work in every posture.

Once Android Auto is working in one posture, keep the car connection the same and test the others while parked. This helps distinguish a connection problem from a change in the phone’s display or app continuity.

What to expect in each phone posture

Phone posture What may change What to check
Closed The cover or front screen may show apps that can continue from the inner screen, depending on the phone and selected apps. This does not by itself establish Android Auto support in that posture. For a supported Galaxy Z Fold, check Samsung’s Continue apps on cover screen setting and whether the relevant app is selected.
Open The phone uses its inner display. Android Auto still uses the car’s display for its in-car interface. Confirm the Android Auto session remains connected and note whether the issue changes when the phone is open.
Partly folded Samsung calls this Flex mode on compatible Galaxy foldables. Compatible apps may offer a layout for the partly folded position; app support varies. Check whether the exact phone model and app support Flex mode. The Flex mode panel is not an Android Auto control.

Use a Galaxy Z Fold with the cover screen closed

Samsung documents app continuation from the main screen to the cover screen on supported Galaxy Z Fold models. To choose which apps can continue when you fold the phone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Display.
  3. Tap Continue apps on cover screen.
  4. Select the apps you want to remain open when you fold the phone.

Samsung’s instructions cover supported Fold models and selected apps; they do not promise that Android Auto will work identically with the phone closed. Check Samsung’s foldable phone guidance for your model and available settings.

Use a Galaxy foldable partly folded

On supported Galaxy Fold and Flip models, Samsung’s Flex mode panel can display controls or layouts for compatible apps when the phone is partly folded. To configure it:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Advanced features.
  3. Tap Flex mode panel.
  4. Enable the panel and choose supported apps for automatic display, if those options are available on your model.

Flex mode availability and app compatibility vary. Samsung’s Flex mode support instructions and developer overview explain the feature, but neither makes the Flex mode panel an Android Auto setting or guarantees Android Auto support while partly folded.

If Android Auto calls fail while the phone is closed

Android Central reported on October 1, 2026, that some users were experiencing Android Auto call failures with closed foldables, including reports involving Motorola Razr devices. The report said Motorola and Google were seeking information. It describes user reports, not a universal restriction, confirmed cause, or verified fix. Check the report for its status, since this issue may change.

Pin down where a posture problem occurs

Record what changes when you move between postures. A failure to connect, a change on the phone’s screen, and a call failure are different symptoms and may have different causes. If you need help from the phone maker, vehicle maker, or app support, include:

  • The exact foldable model and Android version.
  • Whether Android Auto is wired or wireless.
  • The vehicle or head-unit model.
  • Which posture causes the problem.
  • Whether Android Auto fails to connect, the display changes, or only calls fail.
