If music changes when you make a call or use a voice assistant, your phone and car may be switching between Bluetooth audio paths. Hands-Free Profile (HFP) supports voice connections, Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) carries music, and Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) handles media controls. What happens when the microphone is active depends on the phone, car stereo, app, and their implementations.
What each Bluetooth profile does in a car

Bluetooth SIG describes HFP as providing “a wireless means for both remote control of the Mobile Phone by the Hands-Free device and voice connections between the Mobile Phone and the Hands-Free device.” Its Hands-Free Profile specification covers phones paired with hands-free devices, including car-installed equipment. The Bluetooth SIG lists A2DP 1.4.1 as its current adopted specification on the page reviewed; that version listing may change.
AVRCP is not the music stream itself. For example, Microsoft’s Windows Classic Bluetooth audio guidance describes controls and information such as repeat, shuffle, play, pause, volume, browsing, and metadata separately from A2DP audio distribution.
Why microphone use can change music playback
A call or voice app that requests microphone access may establish an HFP voice connection. That can coincide with a change in the selected audio path, so music may sound different, pause, or behave differently while the microphone is in use. The profiles have distinct functions, but that does not mean Bluetooth always lowers music quality whenever a microphone is active.

Microsoft documents one specific example for Windows: establishing an HFP audio connection routes audio to the HFP microphone and speaker, while A2DP playback is used when there is no established SCO connection. On Windows 11, the system may handle selection when both profiles are available. Those details describe Windows behavior; they do not establish how every phone, app, car stereo, or operating system routes audio.
Sound changes can also have other causes, including signal strength, codec support, device settings, or the car’s implementation. Without the phone and vehicle details, a change during microphone use is a plausible profile or routing transition—not a diagnosis.

How to troubleshoot the difference
- Identify when it happens. Note whether the symptom occurs during ordinary music playback, a phone call, voice-assistant use, or another app that captures the microphone. This helps distinguish microphone-related behavior from a problem that occurs during music alone.
- Check the selected audio destination. While the problem is happening, check which output the phone selected and review its call and media Bluetooth settings. Menu names and available controls vary by operating system and version, so use the phone’s current settings rather than relying on a universal menu path.
- Confirm profile support at both ends. The phone and car stereo both need to support the profile functions you want. Bluetooth profiles define interfaces between compatible devices; support on one endpoint alone does not establish that a feature will work across the connection.
- Compare microphone activity with playback. If music changes only when a call or voice app uses the microphone, a switch in audio path is one possible explanation. If it also sounds poor during ordinary playback, investigate signal strength, device settings, codec support, and the vehicle’s Bluetooth implementation.
- Check the vehicle manual. Confirm which Bluetooth features the stereo supports and how the manufacturer describes calls, music, and media controls. Profile support and routing depend on the phone, head unit, and software.
When an upgrade may help
If the existing head unit lacks the functions you need, a compatible Bluetooth car stereo receiver or hands-free car kit may be an option. Before buying, verify the exact model’s HFP support for hands-free voice, A2DP support for music streaming, and AVRCP support for media controls and metadata. Also check phone compatibility, vehicle fit, and installation requirements. A replacement receiver is not guaranteed to fix a routing behavior caused by the phone, app, or software.
Manufacturer specifications should confirm the features for the exact model under consideration. For example, a Sony stereo specification surfaced listing A2DP, AVRCP, and HFP; that supports these as relevant features to check, not a recommendation for a particular model.
