You usually cannot prove that a recording is genuine just by listening. Treat suspicious audio as unverified, check any available provenance signals for what they can establish, and confirm the speaker or request through a separate channel you already trust. A detector that finds no signal does not prove a voice is human or authentic.
What listening can—and cannot—tell you
AI voice cloning can be used in scams and other forms of misuse. A recording may sound convincing, and there is no dependable listening cue that works across voices, generators, and recording conditions. Unusual pauses, unnatural intonation, or odd background sounds may justify closer scrutiny, but they do not prove a clip is synthetic; fluent, natural-sounding speech does not prove it is genuine.
Audio-analysis systems may look for anomalous sound patterns, but the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says effectiveness varies and adversaries can adapt. The FTC also warns that watermarks may be distorted, removed, or misinterpreted. No universal consumer-detector accuracy rate or guaranteed listening tell is established by the cited guidance. What to do when a voice asks you to act
- Pause. Treat urgency, secrecy, pressure to bypass normal procedures, or an unusual payment method as a reason to verify independently. Do not send money, share one-time codes or credentials, or change payment details based only on the voice’s apparent identity.
- End the interaction and use a known channel. Call the person back using a number you had saved before the suspicious contact, or message them through an existing account you already trust. Do not rely on caller ID or a number supplied during the call or message.
- Check the request, not just the sound. Confirm what the person is asking you to do and whether it matches normal procedures. A separate callback verifies the communication path; it is not a forensic test of the recording.
- Preserve relevant evidence. For a suspected scam or other important matter, keep the original audio file, messages, and contact details, and note when and how you received them. Report suspected fraud to the relevant organization or authorities.
This approach reflects the FTC’s emphasis on layered responses to voice-cloning risks: prevention and authentication, monitoring, and evaluation after a recording is used. It does not rely on one detection method as a complete solution. FTC: Approaches to Address AI-enabled Voice Cloning

When and how to check provenance
What OpenAI Verify checks
OpenAI Verify checks supported audio for provenance signals associated with OpenAI tools. OpenAI advises uploading one audio clip of 10–60 seconds for best results. The check reports whether it finds supported signals; it is not a general-purpose detector for audio from every AI system. Its supported formats and coverage can change, so consult the OpenAI Verify guidance for current details.
How to interpret the result
- A supported signal is found: This suggests an origin associated with a supported OpenAI tool. It does not establish that the speech is accurate, unedited, legally owned, consensually created, or presented in the right context.
- No signal is found: Only a supported signal was not found. The clip could be human-made, generated by another system, or generated by a supported system whose signal is absent, unsupported, degraded, or removed. A negative result does not rule out AI generation.
OpenAI’s Content Provenance API documentation describes audio checks as returning a SynthID result. It also says the API is not a general-purpose AI detector and does not identify content generated by every AI system.

Watermarks and metadata are clues, not verdicts
Provenance systems can provide information about a file’s origin or history, but they have different failure modes. OpenAI’s guidance describes SynthID as an embedded watermark and says supported images may also carry C2PA metadata and SynthID. Its API documentation describes C2PA results for images, while audio checks return a SynthID result; do not assume that every audio file has C2PA credentials.
Metadata can be lost during editing, conversion, or sharing. An embedded watermark may persist through some transformations, but a missing result is still inconclusive, and the FTC cautions that watermarks can be altered or removed. Keep the original file when the distinction matters: a compressed or re-exported copy may not preserve the same signals as the source. How to evaluate an audio detector
Before relying on a tool, establish what evidence it examines and whether its coverage fits the file and decision at hand.
- Coverage: Which generators, models, audio formats, and signals does it support?
- Evidence type: Does it inspect embedded watermarks or metadata, analyze audio patterns, or help verify the communication channel? These methods answer different questions.
- Failure modes: Could compression, editing, conversion, unsupported formats, or deliberate changes weaken or remove the signal?
- Stakes: A provenance check may inform review of low-stakes material. For decisions involving money, identity, healthcare, or account access, verify the requester independently and retain human review.
For organizations using media analysis in identity proofing, NIST recommends testing algorithms against both genuine and forged or manipulated media, documenting false-positive and false-negative rates, and augmenting automated analysis with manual review. Those error rates need to reflect the organization’s testing context; they are not a universal accuracy figure for consumer audio detectors. NIST SP 800-63A
