Disabling a router’s DHCP server stops it from automatically assigning IP addresses and related network settings, such as the default gateway and DNS server, to devices on your network. Devices with valid leases may continue working for a while, but new devices and devices whose leases expire need another DHCP server or manually configured settings.

What DHCP does—and what disabling it changes

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) lets a network device automatically provide clients with configuration they need to communicate, including an IP address, DNS server, and default gateway. NETGEAR describes these as settings its router’s DHCP server assigns to LAN computers (NETGEAR Support).

Turning off DHCP disables that service on the router; it does not, by itself, turn off the router’s Wi-Fi or every routing function. What other features remain available depends on the model, its operating mode, and how its ports are used.

Will disabling DHCP disconnect devices?

Not necessarily right away. A device that already has a valid address lease may keep using it temporarily. Under RFC 2131, if a client cannot contact a local DHCP server, it may continue using its previous address until that lease expires. Before expiry, clients can attempt to renew or rebind; if they cannot obtain a renewal, they must stop using the address when the lease expires and try to initialize again (RFC 2131, §3.7).

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

The impact depends on each device’s lease and client state, so devices will not necessarily lose connectivity at the same time or show the same error. Once an existing lease expires, a client without access to another DHCP server cannot get a replacement configuration automatically.

What you may notice after turning DHCP off

  • Existing devices: They may appear unaffected while their current network settings remain valid.
  • New or reconnecting devices: Without another DHCP server, they cannot automatically obtain an IP address, gateway, or DNS settings. That can prevent access to local services or the internet.
  • Devices whose leases expire: If they cannot renew, they must stop using the old address and cannot obtain a replacement through DHCP until a server responds.
  • Router management: The computer you used to change the setting may also rely on DHCP. If no other server is available, you may need to configure its IP settings manually to reach the router again. NETGEAR gives this warning in its guidance on disabling DHCP (NETGEAR Support).

When does it make sense to disable DHCP?

Using a second router as an access point

A common reason is to reuse a second router for Wi-Fi while the primary router handles DHCP. Disabling DHCP can be one part of that setup, but it does not by itself configure the device as a working access point. You must also follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the model’s operating mode, wiring, and management address.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

For example, TP-Link documents an access-point setup for some router models that lack an Operation Mode setting and warns that features requiring the WAN port may not work in that arrangement. Its instructions are model-specific, not a universal procedure (TP-Link: How to configure a TP-Link wireless router as an Access Point).

Using an access point’s automatic DHCP mode

Some access points have a mode that serves clients with DHCP only when the host router or access point’s DHCP service is disabled. TP-Link documents this behavior for the TL-WA801N V6. Do not assume other access points behave the same way; check the exact model’s guide (TP-Link TL-WA801N V6 User Guide).

Before disabling DHCP, decide which device will assign addresses

  • On a single-router network: If you turn off DHCP, identify another DHCP server or plan to configure every client manually. Without either, devices that need a new configuration may lose network access.
  • For a second-router setup: Confirm that the primary router or another device will provide DHCP, and avoid having competing DHCP servers on the same LAN.
  • For router management: Give the secondary device a reachable management address that does not conflict with another device’s address.
  • For features and ports: Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific model and firmware, especially if the setup changes how the WAN port or other features work.

NETGEAR’s support article, last updated July 7, 2025, advises manually assigning computer IP addresses if DHCP is disabled and no other DHCP server is on the network (NETGEAR Support).

How to recover if you lose access

  1. If you can still open the router’s management page, turn its DHCP server back on if that is appropriate for your network.
  2. If no DHCP server is available, temporarily configure the computer with an unused IP address in the router’s LAN subnet, along with the correct subnet mask and gateway. Check the router’s label or documentation for the right values; do not copy an example address blindly.
  3. Reopen the router’s management page and correct the DHCP or access-point configuration. If you intended to use a second router as an access point, verify that the primary router provides DHCP, the secondary management address does not conflict, and the cabling and operating mode match the manufacturer’s instructions.

Manual computer addressing may be necessary to regain access, as NETGEAR notes in its support guidance (NETGEAR Support).
