For a high, sustained squeal, turn down the microphone and speaker, hold the mic closer to the singer, and keep it away from—and pointed away from—the speakers. If the voice sounds delayed or unusually reverberant instead, reduce the karaoke system’s echo or reverb effect first. These are practical first steps, not a guaranteed fix for every microphone or car audio setup.
First, tell feedback apart from echo
Feedback is an audio loop: sound from a loudspeaker re-enters the microphone, is amplified again, and can produce a sustained ringing or squealing tone. Echo and reverberation are repeated or lingering sounds; they may come from reflections or an audio effect. The distinction matters because lowering levels and changing microphone placement address feedback, while reducing an echo or reverb setting addresses an effect. Shure explains how to identify and reduce microphone feedback.
- Likely feedback: a steady ring or squeal that changes or stops when you move the mic or lower a level.
- Likely echo or reverb: a delayed repeat, hollow tail, or spacious sound on the singer’s voice.
As a quick check, note whether the singer hears the delay, whether other occupants hear it too, and whether lowering the mic or speaker level changes the symptom. Those observations can help distinguish a feedback loop from an effect or reflection.
Work through these fixes in order
-
Lower the levels
Turn down the microphone level or gain and the speaker volume until the squeal stops. Raise them gradually only as much as needed for the singer to be heard. Turning the mic up to overpower a squeal can make the feedback loop worse.

-
Move the microphone closer to the singer
Hold the mic near the singer’s mouth so it captures the intended voice without needing as much amplification. Shure calls moving the microphone closer to the desired sound source the single easiest way to reduce feedback. Its guidance also covers microphone and speaker placement.
-
Separate the mic from the speakers
Keep the microphone as far from the loudspeaker as your setup allows, and do not aim its pickup end toward a speaker. If the karaoke audio comes through the car stereo, try lowering the stereo volume as well as the mic level.

Reduce an echo or reverb effect
If the sound is a delayed or lingering voice rather than a sustained squeal, check the karaoke unit for an Echo or Reverb control and reduce it. The exact control and its behavior depend on the device; the setup details here do not identify a particular model.
-
Change one thing at a time
After each adjustment, listen again. If the problem remains, record the microphone model, where its speaker is, whether playback uses the car stereo, and whether the symptom is a squeal or delayed voice. Those details are needed for model-specific troubleshooting.

Why buying a different microphone may not solve it
No microphone is inherently immune to feedback. Shure’s answer to “What microphone can I use that doesn’t cause feedback?” is “no such microphone exists”: feedback depends on the microphone and speaker positions, their frequency responses, and the acoustic environment. A directional mic can help in some circumstances, but that does not guarantee a cure or make any particular model suitable for your car setup. Read Shure’s explanation of why feedback is not solved by a microphone choice alone.

ITU-T P.1120, the October 2025 edition of a recommendation for super-wideband and fullband hands-free communications in motor vehicles, is not a karaoke setup guide. It distinguishes microphone measurements in a defined test environment from installation and in-car acoustics; its hands-free placement guidance should not be treated as a universal karaoke distance or placement rule. Hands-free phone systems may use echo cancellation, echo suppression, noise reduction, and gain adjustment. ITU guidance also warns that extra cascaded processing can degrade speech, and added gain or automatic gain control can cause saturation. That is background for phone-call audio paths—not evidence that a karaoke microphone or car stereo has those features, or that they control karaoke feedback. See the ITU-T P.1100 recommendation for hands-free communication in vehicles.
