Accurate billing details, reachable contact information, and a quick check of your order status can help you respond without sharing sensitive information through an untrusted link. Verification policies differ by seller; no single document or procedure applies everywhere.
Before you place the order
- Check the seller. Make sure you are buying from the retailer you intended to use. For MSI products, MSI recommends checking authorized dealers and online stores through its official website; its March 29, 2024 anti-fraud notice also cautions against unusually low offers and requests for advance payment. This is MSI’s guidance, not confirmation that a particular seller is currently authorized. MSI anti-fraud notice.
- Enter accurate billing information. Use the billing name, address, and phone number associated with your payment account. Newegg Business and B&H describe checking order details against issuer-held information in their respective verification processes. Walmart’s terms also require truthful, accurate billing information and say inaccurate details may lead to cancellation. Walmart.com Terms of Use.
- Use contact details you can access. Keep an eye on the email inbox and phone number attached to the order, including any stated verification window.
- Know where you will check the order. Be ready to sign in to the retailer’s official website or app and review the order there rather than relying on a message link.
What a retailer may ask you to verify
Retailers use different checks, and an “ID verification” request may be part of a broader order or payment review. It does not necessarily mean every buyer must send a government-issued ID.
Newegg Business
Newegg Business says it may compare the billing name, address, and phone number on an order with the card issuer’s records. If information does not match or more details are needed, it may contact the customer by phone or email. Its published process includes an order-resubmission procedure for correcting billing information and says an order that cannot be verified within five business days is automatically canceled. That deadline is specific to Newegg Business, whose page was updated July 6, 2026; it is not an industry-wide rule. See Newegg Business Order verification.
B&H Photo Video
B&H says some orders are subject to verification. It may ask customers to verify card ownership or confirm that order and shipping information are legitimate, and says it may contact them by phone or email. Its guidance says the billing address provided should match the address on file with the card issuer. The page does not establish that every flagged buyer must provide government ID. See B&H Payment Verification.

Walmart
Walmart’s terms say it may request additional information and require verification before acknowledging or completing a purchase. That describes Walmart’s own terms and should not be assumed to apply to another graphics-card seller.
How to handle a verification request safely
- Pause if the message is unexpected. Do not click a link in a suspicious email or text. MSI advises avoiding links from unknown or suspicious URLs and contacting customer service if in doubt. MSI’s anti-fraud guidance.
- Open the retailer’s site yourself. Type its known address into your browser or use a saved bookmark, then sign in and check the order for a verification notice. If you cannot confirm the request there, use support contact details obtained independently from the retailer’s official website.
- Ask what is required and how to submit it. If the request remains unclear, ask what information is needed, why it is needed, how to provide it securely, and what deadline applies. Do not assume a particular upload method is safe just because a message asks you to use it.
- Correct genuine errors through the retailer’s stated process. If your billing details were entered incorrectly, use the retailer’s official account or resubmission procedure. Do not change accurate billing details merely to try to pass a check; inaccurate information can lead to cancellation.
- Respond through a channel you can reach. If the retailer says it may call or email, monitor those channels and reply through the confirmed process. Keep a record of the request and your response.
What card-network rules do—and do not—tell you
Visa’s current consumer-facing rules summary says, “In general, a merchant is permitted to ask for identification but cannot require it as a condition of Visa card acceptance.” The qualification matters: this is Visa’s general summary, not a universal statement of law or a rule for every card network, country, or online order review. It also does not determine whether a retailer will complete an order after conducting its own review. See Visa Rules and policies.

If the order is delayed or canceled
- Check the order page and the retailer’s message for the specific issue, response method, and deadline.
- Contact the retailer using independently confirmed official support details if the request is unclear, the stated deadline has passed, or you cannot access the requested channel.
- If the order is canceled, ask the retailer whether you can correct the information and resubmit or need to place a new order. Procedures vary by seller; Newegg Business, for example, describes a resubmission process in its own policy.
- Do not assume that choosing an authorized seller, using a particular graphics-card model, or meeting a card-network rule guarantees that an order will be approved. Retailers retain their own verification processes.
