To reduce perceived controller lag in Xbox Cloud Gaming, first test a supported wired USB connection, then compare network and display settings one change at a time. The delay may come from the controller link, Wi-Fi, the route to Microsoft’s cloud servers, game processing, or the screen—not just the controller. No single adjustment is guaranteed to fix every setup.
What can cause input lag in Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Cloud gaming sends your inputs to a remote game server and streams the result back to your device. The overall response can be affected by the controller-to-device connection, your local network, the route to the server, game processing, and display processing.
Microsoft says its cloud streaming service pairs players with nearby Azure data centers to minimize network latency, but distance, congestion, and service-side factors are not entirely under your control. Its latency documentation also notes that Bluetooth controller connections and display delay can add to the perceived response time.
1. Compare a wired controller connection
If both your controller and play device support it, connect the controller by USB and test the same game under the same conditions. Xbox lists USB and Bluetooth as controller connection options. A wired comparison can show whether Bluetooth is contributing; it cannot remove delay caused elsewhere in the streaming path.

- Confirm that your controller is supported on the device you are using. Microsoft’s 2025 developer article names Xbox, PlayStation DualSense and DualShock, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers among Bluetooth controllers supported by Xbox Cloud Gaming, but device-specific support can vary.
- Use a USB cable that supports data transfer, not one made only for charging.
- Keep the game, device, network, and display settings unchanged during the comparison.
If the wired connection feels more responsive, the wireless controller link may be part of the problem. If not, continue with the network and display checks rather than assuming the controller is at fault.
2. Check the network connection
Run a network test to establish a baseline, but do not treat download speed as a measure of responsiveness by itself. Xbox’s current cloud gaming guidance lists these throughput rates for best performance:

These are Xbox’s displayed throughput recommendations, not guarantees of low latency. Delay and consistency matter too. Xbox also recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data for best performance.
Try 5 GHz Wi-Fi or reduce wireless congestion
If you use Wi-Fi, connect to the 5 GHz band if your router and device support it. Microsoft says 5 GHz Wi-Fi is generally faster and less congested than 2.4 GHz. Bluetooth and other household devices can also use 2.4 GHz, so wireless activity on that band may contribute to interference or congestion.

- Move closer to the router and compare the result.
- Temporarily reduce other network activity, such as large downloads or streams, to see whether congestion is involved.
- If your device supports Ethernet, test a wired network connection to compare it with Wi-Fi. This is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.
Change one network condition at a time and test the same game. If you change bands, location, and competing traffic all at once, it becomes harder to tell which change mattered.
3. Check display settings and try another device
Turn on your screen’s Game Mode or low-latency mode if it has one, then compare the response. Display processing can add delay even when the controller connection and network are not the main cause. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation describes display latency ranging from a couple of milliseconds on a fast gaming monitor to hundreds of milliseconds on an inexpensive mobile display or a TV without Game Mode; those examples illustrate how much the screen and its settings can differ, not a measurement of your particular setup.

If practical, test another supported device or browser on the same network. A change in responsiveness can help point toward a device or display difference, but it does not isolate the cause perfectly: switching devices can also change other parts of the streaming path.

Why some lag may remain
Xbox Cloud Gaming depends on a round trip between your device and a remote game server. Microsoft says it places servers in Azure data centers worldwide and pairs users with nearby servers to minimize network latency, but that cannot eliminate every source of delay along the route.

Microsoft’s official materials do not establish a universal measured input-delay figure for Xbox Cloud Gaming or a guaranteed millisecond improvement from USB, a router setting, or another individual fix. Use the comparisons above to identify which parts of your own setup affect responsiveness, rather than expecting a specific reduction.
