Yes. A smartphone can take real photographs of stars and night-sky scenes: its camera records light from the sky, and software may combine or process multiple captured frames to produce the final image. That computational processing does not make the photo fake, but it does mean the result may not be a single untouched exposure.

What a smartphone can capture

With a steady phone and a sufficiently dark sky, you can photograph stars and broad night-sky scenes. Results vary with the phone’s camera hardware and software, sky brightness, focus, exposure, and technique. The available guidance supports star-field and night-sky photography; it does not establish that every phone can record faint nebulae or match a dedicated astronomy camera.

Night modes may combine several sensor frames computationally. Google Research explains that longer exposures gather more light, while movement in the scene or camera instability can cause blur. The finished image can therefore be based on real light captured by the phone while still involving substantial processing. Do not assume it is one untouched exposure unless that is confirmed for the specific capture. Google Research’s explanation of Night Sight astrophotography describes this trade-off.

What matters most for a first attempt

Keep the phone still

Longer exposures make movement more visible, so use a tripod or place the phone on a solid, secure surface. NASA’s smartphone guidance puts it simply: “First, steady your smartphone to keep your subjects sharp.” A small smartphone tripod is convenient, but a stable rock, block, or similar support can work. Use a timer if your camera app offers one, so tapping the shutter is less likely to shake the phone. NASA’s smartphone astrophotography guide offers these practical steps.

Choose a dark location and give your eyes time

City lights brighten the sky and make stars harder to capture. Move away from urban lighting when you can. For Pixel star photographs, Google recommends waiting at least 45–90 minutes after sunset; that is Pixel-specific advice, not a universal rule for every phone or observing location. See Google Pixel Camera Help for the documented workflow.

Focus and exposure deliberately

If your camera app provides manual controls, lock focus on a distant bright point and adjust exposure. NASA suggests beginning with an exposure of a few seconds, then reviewing a test image and adjusting as needed. This is a starting point, not a guarantee of a sharp or bright result: the appropriate exposure depends on the phone, support, and conditions. If the built-in app lacks focus or exposure controls, NASA notes that camera apps with those controls are an option.

How to use a documented Pixel astrophotography workflow

Google’s instructions apply to supported Pixel phones and software, not every Android device. For Pixel 4a (5G) and later, Google says astrophotography works only at zoom settings equal to or greater than 1x.

  1. Travel away from city lights; for star photographs, Google recommends waiting at least 45–90 minutes after sunset.
  2. Open Camera and tap Night Sight.
  3. Point the phone at the sky and place it on a steady support. Google says not to hold the phone by hand for astrophotography mode.
  4. Wait for the shutter to switch automatically to Astrophotography mode, then take the photograph.

If the shutter does not switch, the phone has not entered that mode; follow Google’s device-specific guidance rather than assuming the same feature or behavior exists on another phone.

What about an iPhone or another phone?

Apple’s cited guidance covers general iPhone Night mode, not a dedicated Apple astrophotography mode. Apple says exposure can take several seconds depending on darkness and recommends a solid, secure surface or tripod for better stability. Consult Apple Support’s Night mode guidance for those general instructions. Other phones may offer different night modes or controls, so check the manufacturer’s camera instructions for your exact model.

What to expect—and what not to assume

  • A phone can capture stars and broad night-sky scenes when conditions and technique are suitable.
  • A night-mode image may involve frame combination and computational processing; it need not be a single unprocessed exposure to depict light recorded by the camera.
  • Stability, darkness, focus, exposure, camera hardware, and software all affect the outcome.
  • A successful result on one phone does not show that every phone has the same astrophotography feature or capability.
  • The guidance cited here does not establish a current controlled ranking of phone models or parity with specialized astronomy equipment.
