Which Windows screen reader should you try?

These are vendor-documented features and compatibility statements, not results of an independent comparison. How a screen reader behaves can vary with the website, browser version, Windows release, settings, and speech or braille output. A practical choice is the one that works for you on the sites and tasks you actually use.
How to start using Narrator with a browser
Microsoft says Narrator is included with Windows 11, and its guide also covers Windows 10. You can turn it on or off with the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter. Narrator’s scan mode is the documented mode for navigating apps, email, and the web.
- Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter to start Narrator.
- Open your browser and go to a site you want to use.
- Use Narrator’s scan mode and keyboard commands to navigate. Consult the Microsoft Narrator guide for browsing controls, speech settings, and braille information.
- When finished, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Enter again to stop Narrator.
What to know before choosing NVDA
NV Access states that “The NVDA screen reader can be downloaded free of charge by anyone.” The NVDA download page identifies version 2026.2 and says it is available for Windows 10 and later. It directs people on certain older or unsupported Windows configurations to older NVDA versions, which it does not recommend for newer operating systems; check the current page for the version and system requirements that apply to your PC.

NV Access lists Firefox and Chrome on its NVDA product page. The NVDA User Guide also documents browse mode for Microsoft Edge. NVDA can be run portably from removable media, according to the guide. The product page documents refreshable braille support, and NV Access provides a user guide and basic training in electronic text, human-read audio, or braille. Its listed paid training and support options may change, so check NV Access for current details.
When JAWS may be the right fit
JAWS is a commercial screen reader with documented web-browsing keystrokes. Freedom Scientific offers purchase and annual subscription options; consult its JAWS product page for current, regional, and edition-specific licensing terms rather than relying on an old price. Microsoft says its Edge accessibility instructions were tested with JAWS, as well as Narrator and NVDA. That does not guarantee identical results on every site.

Consider output, browser, and the sites you use
Test your actual browsing tasks
Try each candidate, where practical, with the browser you prefer and representative sites: for example, signing in, finding a page section, filling in a form, or using a menu. Official compatibility lists can help you narrow options, but they do not show which will feel easiest or work best for your particular sites.
Choose speech, braille, or both
Narrator and NVDA document support for refreshable braille displays. A display is optional hardware, not a requirement for screen-reader web browsing. If you use one, verify compatibility with your screen reader and setup before choosing a device.

Factor in support and licensing
NVDA is free and open source, with training and support offerings from NV Access. JAWS is commercial software with licensing options from Freedom Scientific. Narrator is already included with Windows 11. These differences may matter as much as browser support, depending on whether you prioritize cost, training, or an existing workflow.
