No phone is proven unhackable. iPhone and Android security modes, and hardened systems such as GrapheneOS, can make particular attacks harder or limit their impact. None is a promise against every vulnerability, physical-access risk, account takeover, or trick that persuades you to expose information. The useful question is which threat a protection is designed for—and what it leaves outside its scope.

What does “unhackable” mean?

It suggests that no attacker can compromise a phone, under any conditions. The Apple, Google, and GrapheneOS documentation covered here describes narrower protections, with prerequisites and limits; it does not support that absolute guarantee. No statistic or independent comparison in these sources establishes that one phone is universally the safest.

Security features are designed around specific paths into a device or account. A protection against a newly initiated USB data connection, for example, does not secure data you choose to share while the phone is unlocked. Account sign-in protection addresses a different problem from device exploitation. A phone may be better defended against one threat while remaining exposed to another.

How do the main options differ?

These options are not interchangeable, and they do not form a reliable single ranking. Their scope and requirements differ:

What does Apple Lockdown Mode protect against?

Apple describes Lockdown Mode as helping protect devices against “extremely rare and highly sophisticated cyber attacks.” It is an optional, extreme setting intended for the very small group of people who may be personally targeted by sophisticated digital threats—not a routine guarantee that every attack will fail.

When enabled, it reduces some ways content and connections can reach the device. Apple says it blocks many attachment types and link previews in Messages, restricts some web technologies, may block unknown incoming FaceTime calls and Apple-service invitations, disables automatic joining of non-secure Wi-Fi networks, turns off 2G and 3G support on iPhone and iPad, and prevents installation of new configuration profiles. Phone calls and plain-text messages continue to work. These changes can affect convenience and compatibility.

Apple’s support page, published September 14, 2026, lists availability in iOS 16 or later, iPadOS 16 or later, watchOS 10 or later, and macOS Ventura or later, with additional protections in later releases. Features depend on the operating-system version. Apple recommends updating first and enabling Lockdown Mode on each supported device for the full set of protections; check the current Apple instructions for the relevant settings.

What does Android Advanced Protection actually do?

Google’s Android Advanced Protection is an umbrella for multiple controls rather than one anti-hacking switch. Depending on the phone and supported features, Google lists Play Protect enforcement, restrictions on installing apps from unknown sources, verification of accessibility tools, memory tagging for supported apps, theft and offline locking, automatic reboot after 72 hours locked, limits on 2G, scam and unsafe-link warnings, USB protection, and selected Chrome restrictions.

A screen lock is required. Some protections need supported hardware or a reboot, and device support and app integrations vary. Google notes that some protections may not function optimally if the screen lock is removed. Check the feature list for your phone in Google’s Advanced Protection guidance.

What is the USB protection boundary?

Google says USB Protection is available on Pixel 6 and later. While a supported phone is locked, it prevents a new USB data connection; charging generally continues. But a data connection started while the phone is unlocked remains active after locking, and USB is not protected until the phone finishes booting. The implementation may differ by manufacturer. So this is a specific barrier to starting a new connection in a particular state—not protection against every USB risk. See Google’s USB protection details.

Can Intrusion Logging tell you whether spyware is present?

Intrusion Logging is an optional investigative aid that requires Advanced Protection Mode; it is not described as a real-time anti-spyware guarantee. It can record app process and installation activity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and network events—including DNS lookups and IP addresses—USB transfers, system-certificate changes, and lock and unlock events.

Google says logs are end-to-end encrypted and stored on Google servers for 12 months. After you download and decrypt them, you are responsible for keeping them secure. Incognito network events may be logged, and someone who can read the decrypted logs may infer which sites were visited. Details are in Google’s Intrusion Logging documentation.

Is GrapheneOS unhackable?

No. GrapheneOS describes itself as a security- and privacy-focused mobile operating system based on AOSP. Its documented approach layers several defenses: reduce exposed code and interfaces, make exploitation harder with mitigations, contain compromises through app and browser sandboxing, and use verified boot and related controls to reduce persistent compromise.

The project explains why it emphasizes defenses beyond patching: “Patching vulnerabilities doesn’t protect users before the vulnerability is known to the vendor and has a patch developed and shipped.” That is the project’s rationale for emphasizing protection against unknown vulnerabilities, not an independent measure of attack frequency or proof that a particular device cannot be compromised. GrapheneOS also notes that some mitigations can cost performance or memory, or affect app compatibility. Its features overview describes the project’s model; it is not an independent audit or comparative device test.

Can a phone be hacked while it is locked?

A lock screen is an important security boundary, but it is not proof that the device is immune to compromise. The protections described above address particular paths and conditions: for instance, Android’s USB rule applies to new data connections while a supported phone is locked, not to a connection already initiated while unlocked or to the period before boot finishes.

Likewise, restrictions that reduce exposure to malicious content or exploit paths do not establish immunity to unknown vulnerabilities or every physical-access, carrier, cloud-account, or social-engineering attack. The practical answer depends on what “hacked” means in the situation: someone accessing an unlocked phone, exploiting the operating system, taking over an online account, or persuading the owner to disclose information are distinct problems.

Does a security key protect the whole phone?

No. A hardware security key can strengthen sign-in to a supported account, which helps address phishing and account takeover. Google’s Advanced Protection Program supports security keys for sign-in; compatibility depends on the account and the devices used. Check connector and NFC support before choosing a key, and follow Google’s account-program guidance.

That account protection does not close every device exploit, secure data on a phone someone can use while it is unlocked, or replace device-level protections. Treat account security and phone security as related but separate layers.

How should you choose protections for your situation?

Start with the likely attacker and access path rather than the “most secure phone” label. Opportunistic malware, account phishing, a lost or seized unlocked phone, malicious links or attachments, USB access, and a highly targeted exploit call for different defenses. A sensible baseline is to:

  • Keep the operating system and apps updated, and use a strong screen lock.
  • Install only apps you need and limit their permissions to what is necessary.
  • Use phishing-resistant sign-in, such as a security key or passkey, for supported accounts where appropriate.
  • Consider a high-risk mode such as Lockdown Mode or Android Advanced Protection when its restrictions suit your needs and your device supports it.
  • Check the feature-specific limits for your device and software version; do not assume that an enabled setting covers every device, account, or connection.

These measures reduce particular risks; they do not guarantee safety. Choose them according to the threats you actually face and the functionality you are willing to trade.
