A token approval lets a smart contract spend a particular token from your wallet; disconnecting from its dapp does not cancel that permission. To reduce risk, check approvals separately on every network you use, revoke permissions you no longer need, and inspect any transactions you do not recognize. Revocation prevents future use of an approval—it cannot undo a transfer or secure a wallet whose recovery phrase or private key has been compromised.
What a token approval does—and what disconnecting does not do
When you approve a token, you authorize a dapp or smart contract to access and move that token from your wallet. Some ERC-20 approvals allow a contract to spend an unlimited amount. For NFTs, an ERC-721 or ERC-1155 setApprovalForAll permission can cover all NFTs associated with a contract. MetaMask explains token approvals in its token approval guide.
Disconnecting a wallet from a website only ends the connection; it does not remove an on-chain token allowance. Ethereum.org notes that approvals do not expire automatically, so an old permission can remain until it is changed on-chain. See Ethereum.org’s guide to revoking smart contract access.
How to find approvals on the networks you use
- Open a checker from its official site. Ethereum.org lists Revoke.cash, Revokescout, and Etherscan’s Token Approval Checker. Do not follow approval-checker links from unsolicited messages; check the address carefully.
- Select the network in both places. Set your wallet and the checker to the same network. Approval tools are network-specific: a result for one network does not show permissions on another. Repeat for every network on which you have used the wallet.
- Review each permission. Check the spender or contract, token, allowance amount, and whether you still need the access. An unfamiliar or unnecessary permission is a candidate for revocation, but a name or label alone is not proof that a contract is safe or malicious.
- Check NFT permissions too. Look for collection-wide permissions such as
setApprovalForAll, not just token-by-token approvals. Revoke.cash notes that some older or non-standard NFT approvals may not appear in standard indexer results; if an expected permission is missing, check the collection interface or a relevant block explorer.
Ethereum.org’s scam help and reporting page also points users to approval-checking tools. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a comprehensive independent feature comparison, so choose a checker that supports the network and permission type you need rather than assuming one tool covers everything.

How to revoke an approval and confirm it is gone
- Select the specific permission in the checker and choose its revoke action.
- Review the wallet transaction prompt. Confirm that it corresponds to the intended revocation and is on the network where the approval exists. Submit only if the details match what you intend.
- Pay the network fee and wait for processing. Revocation is an on-chain transaction and requires a network fee. For an ERC-20 token, revocation sets the allowance to zero; for an NFT, it disables the corresponding approval.
- Refresh and verify. After the transaction processes, refresh the checker and reconnect the wallet if needed. Confirm that the permission no longer appears.
Removing access does not unwind a transfer that already happened. Existing staking, lending, or pooling positions are not withdrawn by revoking an approval, though adding funds or using the service again may require a new approval. An active NFT marketplace listing may depend on its approval remaining active. These trade-offs are described by Revoke.cash’s FAQ.
How to investigate activity you do not recognize
- Open the wallet’s activity view and identify the transaction in question.
- Inspect it in the relevant network’s block explorer. Compare its date and time, recipient, dapp or contract, and value with activity you recognize. Check the address and transaction hash against relevant explorers or reporting resources when useful.
- Assess the evidence, not just the labels. A familiar-looking name or security badge is not proof that an interaction is safe. MetaMask says that the absence of a verified badge does not by itself mean a contract is unsafe; its risk alerts and transaction simulations also cannot guarantee that every threat will be detected. What to do if you suspect the wallet itself is compromised
A suspicious allowance is not the same as proof that someone has your recovery phrase or private key. But if you see unauthorized transactions, or have reason to believe the phrase, key, or device is compromised, treat it as a wider wallet compromise: revoking approvals alone is not enough.

- Stop using the compromised wallet and recovery phrase. Create a new wallet from a clean browser profile or a separate device, following MetaMask’s compromised-account guidance.
- Be cautious about moving remaining assets. Move them only if you can do so safely. If a sweeper script may be present, do not add ETH or other tokens to the compromised wallet to pay gas; newly funded assets may be taken as well.
- Keep records. Save transaction hashes, addresses, screenshots, and relevant communications for reporting.
- Do not expect an on-chain reversal. Blockchain transactions cannot be reversed, and revoking an approval cannot recover assets already transferred.
