In Microsoft Edge, Microsoft’s name for Narrator’s webpage-navigation feature is Scan mode. “Browse mode” is explanatory terminology Microsoft uses in Narrator training for the same kind of cursor-based reading and navigation—not a separate Edge mode established in its current documentation.
Are Scan mode and Browse mode different features in Edge?
No separate Edge setting called Browse mode is established by the Microsoft documentation covered here. Microsoft’s current feature name is Scan mode. Its Narrator training transcript calls the feature “Narrator’s browse mode” to connect it with familiar screen-reader terminology.
The distinction is therefore mainly one of naming: Scan mode is the feature to look for in Microsoft’s current instructions; browse mode describes a way of navigating web content. Microsoft’s older page about virtual or browse modes provides historical terminology, but current setup guidance is in its Scan mode chapter.
What does Narrator Scan mode do?
Scan mode lets Narrator users read and navigate webpages with the keyboard. It supports moving through content with arrow keys and using structural commands to reach elements such as headings, links, tables, and landmarks. Microsoft says Scan mode is available in Windows beyond webpages, and that it turns on automatically in Edge when Narrator is being used.

How to use Scan mode in Edge
- Start Narrator if it is not already running. In Edge, Microsoft says Scan mode turns on automatically.
- Move through the page with the Up and Down arrow keys. Use Enter or Spacebar to activate the focused item.
- Jump by structure when useful. Microsoft’s training example uses H for the next heading and Shift+H for the previous heading.
- Toggle Scan mode with the Narrator key + Spacebar. Caps Lock and Insert are the default Narrator keys; see Microsoft’s Narrator basics for key information.
Microsoft’s Narrator training transcript demonstrates the heading commands. Available commands and documentation may change with Windows updates.

Why do the arrow keys behave differently in a text box?
Scan mode automatically turns off in edit fields so you can enter text. If the arrow keys stop navigating the page while you are in a text field, that is expected: they are available for editing. After leaving the edit field, press Up or Down to resume Scan mode navigation.
