A cold room may be losing heat through a draft, lack of insulation, or a duct that is not delivering enough warm air. Start by noting when and where the temperature difference occurs, then check airflow and visible leaks before deciding on a repair. For hidden leaks, complicated duct problems, or work that could affect fuel-burning appliances, get a qualified home-energy or HVAC professional to assess the cause.

What a cold spot can tell you

“Hot and cold rooms; uneven temperature between rooms” is how ENERGY STAR describes a common home-comfort problem. Uneven temperatures can point to attic, basement or crawlspace conditions, or duct problems—not just a draft around a window. The location and pattern of the cold spot help narrow down what to inspect.

  • A draft at a door or window suggests a leaky closure.
  • A cold floor above a basement or crawlspace makes that space worth checking.
  • A room with noticeably weaker supply-register airflow may have an airflow or duct issue.
  • A cold area near an exterior wall or ceiling may involve insulation coverage, air leakage, or both.

These are screening clues, not proof of a particular fault. Compare the affected area with nearby rooms, and note whether the problem worsens in cold or windy weather or appears mainly while the heating system is running.

How to check a cold room, step by step

1. Record the pattern and check the register

Write down which room and surface feels cold, when you notice it, and how it compares with nearby rooms. Check that furniture, curtains, or other objects are not blocking the supply register. If airflow feels much weaker than at comparable registers, record that as a clue; official guidance does not set a universal airflow threshold for diagnosing a problem.

This means the reading you see reflects the average temperature within the circular area targeted by the infrared sensor — not a single point. It also features a 𝒎𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒎𝒖𝒎 𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚 for additional insights.

2. Look for drafts at doors and windows

Inspect the edges of closed doors and windows and other visible penetrations for gaps. ENERGY STAR suggests a paper test: close a door or window on a sheet of paper. If the paper pulls out without tearing, the closure may not be tight. A visual inspection or flashlight can also reveal visible gaps.

ENERGY STAR also describes a DIY smoke test that uses exhaust fans to create pressure. Its instructions say to turn off combustion appliances first. Because depressurizing a home can interact with fuel-burning equipment, do not improvise this test around such appliances; ask a professional if you are unsure.

  • [Data hold]When pull the trigger, LCD display reading with SCAN icon. Release the trigger, display reading with HOLD icon. Built-in 8 sec auto power off function.
  • [Emissivity:0.95 preset]Most organic materials and painted or oxidized surfaces have an emissivity of 0.95 (pre-set in the unit). Inaccurate readings will result from measuring shiny or polished metal surfaces. To compensate, cover the target surface with masking tape or flat black paint. Measure the tape or painted surface when the tape or painted reach the same temperature as the material underneath.

3. Look beyond the obvious window draft

Large leaks can be hidden in attics and basements. Check accessible areas around the attic hatch, wiring and plumbing penetrations, open soffits, recessed lights, flue or duct chases, and basement rim joists—the areas where framing meets the foundation. A visible gap in one of these places can affect comfort in a room elsewhere in the home.

4. Check insulation coverage

In an accessible attic, look for insulation that is distributed evenly, including near the eaves, and note low spots. ENERGY STAR offers a visual rule of thumb: insulation level with or below the attic floor joists may indicate that more is needed; insulation well above the joists may mean additional material is not cost-effective. This is not a universal target: the appropriate amount depends on the climate zone and existing insulation R-value.

Insulation and air sealing address different problems. The U.S. Department of Energy explains: “Insulation works by blocking the flow of heat through a surface such as a wall or roof. But insulation does not necessarily block the movement of air, especially when cracks, holes, or other gaps are found in the house.” DOE’s Consumer Guide to Air Sealing the Home (2021) describes why both conditions may need attention.

5. Inspect accessible ductwork

Look for visible ducts with cracks, kinks, loose supply boots, or missing insulation, particularly if the room has weak airflow. ENERGY STAR identifies these as items to check when temperatures vary between rooms. Do not assume that adding insulation to the room will solve an airflow problem; inaccessible or complex ductwork calls for professional assessment.

Choose a repair that matches the finding

What you find Possible next step Important qualification
Loose-fitting door or window closure Repair the closure; suitable weatherstripping may help with a movable edge leak. Confirm the leak first and choose material suited to the door or window.
Small, stationary gap around a pipe or wire in an attic Caulk or foam may be suitable. Product choice depends on the material and location.
Gap around a hot flue or chimney penetration Use an appropriate high-temperature sealing approach, such as metal flashing and high-temperature caulk. Do not use ordinary foam or caulk or push insulation against a hot pipe. Clearances matter; leave uncertain conditions to a qualified professional.
Uneven attic insulation or substantial attic leakage Address air leakage and insulation as a coordinated project; plug large holes first. Insulation needs vary by climate zone and existing R-value.
Weak or uneven supply airflow Have relevant duct sections assessed for damage, loose connections, or missing insulation. Complex or inaccessible ductwork is not a visual DIY diagnosis.
Cold floor above a basement or crawlspace Inspect the space for air leaks and insulation issues. ENERGY STAR lists cold floors and uneven temperatures among symptoms associated with basement or crawlspace projects.

ENERGY STAR says air sealing and insulation can save up to 10% on annual energy bills; the page does not establish a more specific scope for that figure. Separately, ENERGY STAR attributes to EPA an estimate of 15% average heating and cooling cost savings, or 11% average total energy cost savings, for air sealing plus adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and basements. These are broad estimates, not predictions for one household or one isolated repair.

When to stop DIY work and get an assessment

Air sealing can affect how fuel-burning appliances vent and how fresh air enters the home. ENERGY STAR warns that sealing a home or ductwork can cause appliances such as water heaters to backdraft; a tighter home may also need mechanical ventilation. DOE likewise notes that adequate ventilation matters for indoor air quality and combustion appliances.
