Yes, but only force-restart a PC during an update if it is genuinely unresponsive or the screen is blank. If Windows still responds, save your work and use its normal update or troubleshooting options instead. A progress percentage that appears frozen is not, by itself, proof that the update has stopped, and Microsoft gives no universal wait time after which it is safe to interrupt.

What should I do if Windows Update is stuck?

First distinguish a slow update from an unresponsive PC. If you can use Windows, start with the less disruptive steps below. If the screen is blank or the computer will not respond, see the separate forced-restart guidance.

Prepare before troubleshooting

  • Save open work and close applications if Windows is usable.
  • Back up important personal files before trying update fixes. Microsoft suggests copying files to a USB drive as one option; a USB drive is simply optional backup storage, not a repair tool. See Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guidance.
  • Keep the PC connected to reliable power and the internet while troubleshooting or downloading updates.

Run the troubleshooter for your Windows version

  1. Windows 11: Open Get Help and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. If it does not resolve the problem, follow the problem-specific or general steps on Microsoft’s troubleshooting page.
  2. Windows 10: Use the settings-based Windows Update troubleshooter path described on Microsoft’s applicable support page. Menu labels and available steps can vary by Windows version.

If Windows offers an update restart, save work, close apps, then select Start > Power > Update and restart or Update and shut down. This orderly option is different from cutting power during installation.

How long should I wait for Windows Update?

There is no universal number of minutes that makes it safe to interrupt an update. Microsoft says download and installation time depends on connection speed, network settings, and update size. Its guidance covers cases such as updates stuck at 0% or 100% and installations that remain at 51–99%, but does not set a single safe-interruption timer. Read Microsoft’s advice for updates that appear stuck.

How do I force restart my PC during an update?

A forced restart is a fallback for a genuinely blank or unresponsive PC, not the standard response to a slow-looking progress screen. Microsoft’s button-hold instructions are in its blank-screen troubleshooting guide, so apply them to that symptom and follow the device maker’s instructions if they differ.

  1. For a blank screen, Microsoft says to hold the power button for 20 seconds to force a restart.
  2. If the screen remains blank, its advanced guidance says to hold the button for 10 seconds to force shutdown, repeat this 2–3 times until Windows enters Recovery Mode, then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.

Forcing power off interrupts the running session and may leave Windows needing recovery. Microsoft does not quantify the file-damage risk for every update and device, so neither assume interruption is harmless nor that it will necessarily corrupt Windows.

What if Windows will not start after the restart?

Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) options in order of disruption. If the problem began after a recent update, Microsoft lists Uninstall updates as a recovery option. More extensive choices, such as resetting or reinstalling Windows, can have data-loss consequences; review the prompts carefully and back up important files whenever possible. Microsoft notes that a BitLocker recovery key may be required to access most WinRE options. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.

Which approach fits your situation?

Situation First choice Why
Windows still responds Back up, run the version-appropriate troubleshooter, and use Update and restart if offered Uses Windows’ normal update path before more disruptive recovery actions.
Screen is blank or PC is unresponsive Follow Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance The button-hold steps are documented for blank-screen symptoms, not every slow update.
Windows no longer starts Use WinRE, beginning with less disruptive options such as uninstalling a recent update Reset or reinstall options can have broader consequences.
Windows version affects the steps Windows 11: Get Help troubleshooter; Windows 10: settings-based troubleshooter Navigation differs by version. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that version.

Why Windows may restart differently on some Windows 11 PCs

Microsoft’s article dated August 14, 2026, describes a gradual rollout for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1 associated with updates released on and after July 28, 2026. On eligible PCs, some restart-requiring updates may be grouped with the monthly security update, while some updates still install right away. This behavior depends on version and rollout; it does not mean every Windows 11 PC has the same update schedule. Details: Microsoft’s Windows Update information.
