First confirm whether the PC is registered, already joined, or hybrid joined; then plan any needed file and settings migration separately. For a hybrid-joined device, Microsoft says a Windows reset is required for a supported move to Entra join.
Understand the device state before changing it
“Registered,” “Microsoft Entra joined,” and “hybrid joined” describe different relationships. The distinction matters because registration is associated with a user profile, while joining changes the device’s relationship to the organization and the Windows sign-in model.
- Entra registered: A work account is connected to the current Windows user profile. Registration does not make that account the Windows sign-in identity. Microsoft describes this relationship in its Microsoft Entra device management FAQ.
- Entra joined: The device is joined to the organization’s Entra tenant, and users can sign in to Windows with an organizational account. See Microsoft’s explanation of what a Microsoft Entra joined device is.
- Hybrid joined: The device is joined to on-premises Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID. This is a separate state from either registration or cloud-only Entra join.
To inspect the state, sign in to Windows as the affected user, open Command Prompt, and run dsregcmd /status. In the output, read the device-state and user-state sections separately:
AzureAdJoinedandDomainJoineddescribe device join state.WorkplaceJoinedappears in user state and indicates whether an Entra-registered account is present in that user’s Windows profile context.
Microsoft documents these fields in Troubleshoot devices by using the dsregcmd command. Also check the Windows edition: Entra join is not supported on Windows Home editions, as noted in Microsoft’s Windows 11 OOBE join guidance.

Will joining Entra ID keep the existing Windows profile?
Not by itself. A Windows profile is tied to a Windows security identity. Signing in with a different Entra identity does not automatically reassociate that identity with a profile previously used by a local or domain account. The new sign-in may create or use a different profile, so do not assume that the old desktop, application settings, and files will appear under it.
For hybrid-joined devices in particular, Microsoft’s Intune guidance is explicit: “Remember, there’s no Microsoft supported process or path to convert an existing device from Hybrid Microsoft Entra Join to Microsoft Entra Join without a Windows reset.” The supported device transition therefore is not an in-place profile conversion; it requires a reset-based deployment path. See Join your cloud-native endpoints to Microsoft Entra.

Choose a migration path based on what you need to preserve
| Approach | Supported device path | What it preserves |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the device registered | Leave the Windows sign-in identity and device join state unchanged; this does not convert registration into Entra join. | The existing profile remains in place because the sign-in identity has not been replaced. This does not meet a requirement to make the device Entra joined. |
| Reset and provision for Entra join | For a hybrid-to-Entra move, use a Windows reset and deploy the device into Entra join, rather than attempting an unsupported in-place conversion. | Plan files and settings separately. OneDrive for work or school can synchronize user data for access after provisioning; this is not preservation of the original local profile. |
| Use a profile or user-state migration process | Assess and pilot the process separately from the device join. A Microsoft Q&A discussion mentions user-state migration and third-party profile utilities, but this is community guidance, not a Microsoft-supported conversion path. | Capabilities vary by process. Validate which files, settings, application data, and identity-bound items actually transfer before relying on it. |
For reset-based deployment, Microsoft’s Windows Autopilot for existing devices describes reimaging an existing PC for deployment. Where Windows user data is managed with OneDrive for work or school, synchronized data can be available again after provisioning. That continuity applies to synchronized data; it does not make the old local Windows profile the profile for the new Entra identity.
If the device is only registered, remove the work account carefully
Removing an Entra-registered work account is not the same operation as joining the device to Entra ID. Microsoft documents this Windows 10/11 route for disconnecting the registered account:

Before disconnecting, check whether the account is used for single sign-on (SSO) or device management (MDM). Microsoft warns that the legacy Workplace Join removal tool can remove SSO accounts and unenroll MDM, so do not use it casually. The account-removal steps and warning are covered in Microsoft’s device management FAQ.

- Confirm the starting state: Use
dsregcmd /statusin the affected user’s session and distinguish device-state fields fromWorkplaceJoined. - Confirm eligibility: Verify the Windows edition and the organization’s Entra and deployment configuration before attempting join.
- Inventory what matters: Treat synchronized files, locally stored files, application settings, installed applications, and the original profile as separate migration items.
- Check identity dependencies: Test application credentials and settings tied to the old domain or local identity under the new Entra sign-in.
- Validate management effects: Review SSO and MDM dependencies before disconnecting a registered account or using a removal tool.
- Pilot the migration: If using a profile or user-state migration process, test it with representative applications and data before applying it broadly.
Microsoft Q&A has a community discussion about migrating an existing domain user profile to an Entra ID user profile. Its replies can inform investigation, but they do not change Microsoft’s documented reset requirement for hybrid-to-Entra device conversion.
