To move to a new iPhone without losing data, make sure you can sign in to your Apple Account, create or confirm a current backup, transfer or restore to the new phone, and check that important information arrived. Keep the old iPhone until setup and downloads are complete and you have verified the data. Erase it only when you are ready to sell, trade in, or give it away.
Before you start: secure access and make a backup
Have your old iPhone passcode and Apple Account password ready. Check that the old iPhone is up to date and that a recent iCloud backup exists before beginning setup. Apple’s setup guidance explains how to prepare the current phone and new iPhone.
If you use a computer backup, note its date and size, and keep the encryption password available if you set one. An encrypted computer backup is necessary to transfer Health and Activity data; those data are not included in an unencrypted backup, according to Apple’s backup instructions.
Pick a time when you can leave the phones available. A direct Quick Start transfer keeps both devices occupied until it finishes, and its duration depends on network conditions and how much data is being moved.

If you need more iCloud storage
Apple offers eligible buyers temporary iCloud storage to back up an old iPhone for transfer to a new one. On the old phone, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Get Started, then follow the prompts. Apple’s temporary-storage instructions say the backup must be restored within 21 days; the old iPhone may offer a request for an additional 21 days. After restoration, the temporary backup remains available for seven days before deletion. These time windows are Apple’s stated policy and may change; check the current instructions. Do not erase the old iPhone before the restore is complete.
Choose a transfer method

Choose based on whether both phones are available, your iCloud space and network, access to a computer, whether Health and Activity data must transfer, and how long you can wait. A cable is not required for Quick Start or a backup restore.

Quick Start direct transfer
- Connect the old iPhone to Wi-Fi and turn on Bluetooth.
- Turn on the new iPhone and place it near the old one.
- Follow the on-screen Quick Start prompts and choose direct transfer when offered.
- Keep both phones close together and connected to power until the transfer completes.
Quick Start with iCloud
- Start Quick Start with the phones nearby and follow the setup prompts.
- When asked how to transfer data, choose the iCloud download option.
- Leave the new iPhone connected to Wi-Fi and power while apps and cloud content download.
Restore from a computer
Connect the new iPhone to the computer holding the backup and restore it using Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, as appropriate for that computer. Select the intended backup after checking its date and size. If it is encrypted, enter the backup password when prompted.
Check the new iPhone before erasing the old one
Wait for setup and restoration to finish, then check the information you care about on the new phone. Open key apps and confirm that important photos, contacts, messages, and other expected content are present. If you restored from iCloud, some content may still be downloading; keep the new iPhone on Wi-Fi and power until it has had time to arrive. Apple explains how to choose and restore an iCloud backup.

Keep the old iPhone available until those checks are done. This gives you a fallback if you discover an incomplete transfer or need to make another backup.

Once the new phone is working and you have verified the transfer, use Apple’s erase procedure before selling, trading in, or giving away the old iPhone. Erasing removes personal information from the device and turns off Find My and Activation Lock. Follow the current Apple preparation and erase steps; unpair a paired Apple Watch and remove the old iPhone from trusted devices as part of preparing it for hand-off.

If you sell an iPhone with eSIM, choose the option to erase the eSIM when prompted. Do not try to clean up by manually deleting iCloud-synced photos, contacts, or documents before erasing: deletion while signed in to iCloud can also remove those items from iCloud and other connected devices. Use the erase process instead.
