If mail stops moving after a Zimbra security update, first identify the installed Zimbra release and the affected delivery path, then collect service, log, and queue evidence before changing configuration or rolling back. There is no single diagnosis or universal rollback procedure: the right next step depends on whether mail is inbound, outbound, or being transferred locally from the MTA to a mailbox.
1. Record the version and scope of the failure
Before restarting services, changing settings, or removing queued mail, write down the exact installed Zimbra version and patch, the security package or update applied, when delivery changed, and which servers were updated. Also identify whether the problem affects inbound messages, outbound messages, local delivery between users, or more than one path.
Zimbra publishes release notes for individual server versions, so an update recommendation for a different branch may not apply. Check the Zimbra release index and the notes for the installed version. At the research date of October 4, 2026, the index listed Zimbra 10.1 patch 10.1.21; its release notes give a September 24, 2026 release date. These details are a dated reference, not a substitute for checking the current patch level.
2. Establish what is failing before changing anything
Check services and reproduce with a controlled message
From the affected Zimbra server, check service state with zmcontrol status, then send a controlled test message through the path that is failing. Watch the MTA log at /var/log/zimbra.log during the test and note the timestamp, sender, recipient, and any delivery-status text or error. These commands and paths are referenced in Zimbra troubleshooting material, but some related service guidance is archived or draft material; verify them against current documentation for the installed release.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Do not infer a root cause from a service being up or down alone. Match the test message to the log entry and record which component reports the failure. Preserve relevant log excerpts and queue output before making a change.
Use queue status as evidence
Determine whether the test message is deferred, held, or otherwise reported as undelivered. Deferred messages are retried automatically according to Zimbra’s archived queue-monitoring guidance; held messages will not be delivered until released. That queue article warns it is archived and not valid for recent versions, so do not assume its commands apply to your server. In particular, avoid deleting or flushing messages until you have confirmed the queue state, message evidence, and version-appropriate procedure.

3. Follow the affected delivery path
Inbound mail
- Check whether the Zimbra MTA receives an incoming connection. If it does not, verify that the domain’s MX record points to the intended MTA and that external mail servers can reach it on port 25.
- If the MTA receives mail but logs show LMTP connection failures to port 7025, investigate the local transfer from the MTA to the mailbox server rather than treating it as an external DNS or connectivity problem.
- Compare the test message’s arrival, handoff, and queue status with the timestamps in the MTA log to locate where progress stops.
Outbound mail
- Check the configured relay and whether the server can reach the intended external SMTP service.
- Review DNS and the MTA log for the test message’s specific delivery error and status.
- Zimbra material containing a detailed outbound checklist is explicitly a rough-draft training page. Use it only as diagnostic context and confirm any settings or commands with current guidance for your version.
Local MTA-to-mailbox delivery
If the message is accepted by the MTA but does not reach a local mailbox, investigate the handoff between those components. A logged LMTP failure on port 7025 is a clue to examine that local transfer; it does not, by itself, prove that a security update caused the failure.
4. Compare symptoms with the exact release and security notes
Once you have the version, patch, path, timestamps, service state, queue status, and log evidence, compare them with the matching release notes and entries in Zimbra’s Security Advisories. The advisory register lists fixed issues by release or patch version and says administrators can obtain the latest patches using yum or apt. Its general update note is not a reason to install an unverified package during an active incident: first confirm which release and patch apply to your installation.

A relevant version-specific example is Zimbra 10.1.16, released February 4, 2026. Its notes say, “Restored mail rendering stability while maintaining the existing security protections,” alongside security fixes and restoration of PDF preview functionality. This documents a stability fix for that release while retaining its stated protections; it does not show that security updates generally disrupt mail delivery or identify the cause of a different server’s incident. See the Zimbra 10.1.16 release notes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Choose a next step without weakening security
- If the documentation identifies a fix for your exact branch: follow the release-specific instructions and applicable change controls. Confirm that the target patch is intended for the installed version before applying it.
- If evidence points to DNS or network reachability: verify the affected records, firewall rules, and connectivity along that delivery path before changing Zimbra’s mail configuration.
- If a service or local handoff is failing: use the relevant current, version-specific Zimbra troubleshooting guidance and the log evidence to decide whether a service action or configuration change is warranted.
- If the release notes do not explain the symptom: escalate with the installed version and package, affected path and servers, timestamps, service status, queue output, and relevant log excerpts. Zimbra’s published notes are version-specific, and the available documentation does not establish a universal rollback procedure for delivery incidents.
Keep security protections in place while diagnosing unless version-specific guidance or your supported incident process directs otherwise. A broad rollback or an unverified configuration change can obscure the original failure and introduce a separate security or delivery problem.
