If you want to stream PC VR games to a Meta Quest without using Meta Quest Link, start with Steam Link if your games are in Steam and you want a straightforward wireless setup. Choose ALVR if you want an open-source option and are comfortable checking hardware and network requirements. Both stream wirelessly; neither is a cable-based replacement.

Steam Link: the practical choice for Steam libraries
Steam Link streams PC VR games wirelessly from a computer to a compatible Quest on the same network. The Meta Store listing describes it as streaming games in a user’s Steam library to a Meta Quest headset; the app guides users through connecting to a computer with Steam installed and running. Supported headsets and PC requirements
The cited Meta Store listing names Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro. Valve’s documented VR requirements include Windows 10 or newer and an NVIDIA GTX 970 or better. The Meta Store listing gives a recommended configuration of 16 GB RAM and an NVIDIA RTX 2070 or AMD RX 6600. These are published requirements and recommendations, not evidence that every supported PC will deliver the same experience.

Network requirements
The Meta Store listing specifies a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router as the minimum network tier and recommends Wi-Fi 6 or 6E. Steam also specifies that the PC should connect to the router by wire. The listing is for Meta Store en-GB; regional listings may differ. A faster router is not automatically necessary if your current network meets the stated minimum and works reliably in your home.
ALVR: an open-source option with more setup checks
ALVR describes streaming PC VR games from a PC to a headset over Wi-Fi. Its project README lists Quest 1, Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest Pro, and supports Windows 10/11 and Linux; the README points Linux users to its wiki for detailed compatibility. ALVR requires SteamVR and a supported hardware video-encoding path. Consult the ALVR project README for current instructions and compatibility details.

Check the video encoder and drivers
The README lists NVIDIA NVENC on GTX 1000-series or newer GPUs, AMD AMF/VCE, or Intel VPL on Arc, Tiger Lake, or newer hardware. It also calls for current drivers. Verify that your specific GPU and driver support the relevant encoding path before setting up ALVR.

Set up the network for streaming
ALVR recommends 5 GHz 802.11ac Wi-Fi for the headset and wired Ethernet for the PC. It expects the PC and headset to be on the same router unless you configure a routed connection. These are project recommendations, not guaranteed performance thresholds.

How to choose based on your setup
- Your games are in Steam and you prefer fewer configuration decisions: try Steam Link first, provided your headset, PC, and network meet its published requirements.
- You want an open-source project or need to check broader documented headset support: consider ALVR, after verifying your operating system, encoder, and network setup.
- You are comparing Virtual Desktop: check its current official listing and documentation for the exact headset, price, version, and connection options before deciding; those details are not established here.
- You need a cable connection: neither Steam Link nor ALVR is the answer described here; both documented options stream wirelessly.
Prepare your network before troubleshooting
For either documented alternative, keep the Quest and PC on the same router for the standard setup, and connect the PC to the router by Ethernet where possible. Steam Link lists 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 as its minimum and Wi-Fi 6/6E as recommended; ALVR recommends 5 GHz 802.11ac for the headset. If your network is below those tiers or wireless streaming is unreliable, improving the router or placement may help, but the sources do not establish that a router upgrade will fix every connection problem.
Also confirm that Steam and SteamVR are installed and running for these PC VR routes. For ALVR, check the encoder and drivers against its README. Avoid interpreting a stated minimum GPU or Wi-Fi tier as a promise of particular latency or visual quality: neither source provides a cross-option benchmark.
