You can assign Snipping Tool to the Copilot key only if it appears in the Windows Custom app picker on your PC. Check Settings for Customize Copilot key on keyboard; if Snipping Tool is not listed, use Windows+Shift+S to open its capture overlay.
Check whether Snipping Tool can be assigned to the Copilot key
- Open Settings. Find Customize Copilot key on keyboard by searching Settings, or look under Personalization > Text input. On some configurations, the route is Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard > Shortcuts and hotkeys > Customize Copilot key on keyboard. The location and available choices can vary by Windows build and device. See Microsoft’s Copilot key guidance and Microsoft Learn’s Windows Copilot documentation.
- If the setting offers Custom, select it and inspect the app list for Snipping Tool.
- If Snipping Tool is listed, select it and follow any on-screen prompt to apply the choice. Press the Copilot key to check whether it opens the app.
The Custom picker is not a general-purpose browser for every installed program. Microsoft says an eligible app must be signed, packaged as MSIX, and registered as a Copilot hardware key provider. Its documentation does not confirm that Snipping Tool meets those conditions, so availability must be checked on the individual PC.
If Snipping Tool is not in the app list
Use Windows+Shift+S to open the Snipping Tool image-capture overlay, then choose the capture mode you need. You can also open Snipping Tool from the Start menu. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions document the screenshot workflow. For the video-capture overlay, use Windows+Shift+R.
These are alternatives, not the same behavior: assigning an eligible app to the Copilot key would launch that app, while Windows+Shift+S directly opens the capture overlay. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcut list includes the screenshot shortcut.

When the Copilot key behaves differently
Some manufacturers provide their own control for the Copilot key. If yours does, Microsoft advises using either the Windows setting or the device maker’s control—not both.
