No. A down camping blanket loses much of its insulating ability when the down gets wet and clumps. Water-resistant shell fabric or treated down can help resist moisture, but neither makes a blanket waterproof or reliably warm when saturated. If damp conditions are likely, synthetic insulation is more forgiving.
Why wet down loses warmth
Down keeps you warm by trapping air in its loft. When the plumes get wet, they can clump and lose loft, reducing the insulation. REI’s sleeping-bag care guidance puts it plainly: a wet down bag “won’t keep you warm.” That is general guidance about down insulation, not a blanket-specific test.
The sources available do not establish a percentage of warmth retained, a temperature rating for wet blankets, or a controlled comparison of wet camping blankets. Treat the practical warning as qualitative: keep the fill dry, and do not count on a wet down blanket for dependable warmth.
What “water resistant” means for a down blanket
Water-repellent shell fabric
A durable water repellent (DWR) finish helps water bead on the outer fabric and delays its saturation. Patagonia describes DWR as protection for the outer fabric, not as a waterproof barrier. The finish can be overwhelmed, and exposed seams or openings may still let moisture reach the fill. Patagonia’s down-care guidance explains the finish’s role.

Hydrophobic down fill
Hydrophobic or water-repellent down is treated to improve its resistance to water and humidity. REI describes treated down as more resistant to moisture, but still warns that down loses insulating ability when the plumes get wet. A treatment is not a guarantee that saturated fill will stay warm. REI’s down-versus-synthetic comparison covers the distinction.
Neither treatment makes the whole blanket waterproof
Shell treatment and fill treatment address different parts of the blanket. They do not establish that the complete item can withstand prolonged rain, pooled water, condensation, or a spill. No general waterproof rating or wet-weather performance can be inferred without model-specific specifications.

Down or synthetic for damp conditions?
REI’s comparison concerns sleeping bags, so use it as general insulation guidance; blanket construction varies by model.
| Decision | Down | Synthetic |
|---|---|---|
| When damp | Insulation declines if the plumes get wet; water-repellent treatment improves resistance but does not remove this limitation. (REI) | Insulates better when wet and dries faster. (REI) |
| Weight and packed size | Lighter and compresses smaller for comparable insulation. (REI) | Heavier and bulkier for comparable insulation. (REI) |
| Best fit | Dry conditions when low weight and small packed volume matter. (REI) | Damp-prone trips or when easier moisture recovery matters. (REI) |
| Relative cost | Moisture-resistant down can cost more. (REI) | Polyester fill typically costs less than down. (REI) |
How to keep a down camping blanket dry on a trip
- Pack it in a waterproof stuff sack, or line a regular sack or pack with a waterproof liner. These protect bedding during transport; they do not waterproof the blanket once it is out.
- Air damp bedding as soon as practical, including after the trip. REI recommends airing sleeping bags daily and allowing several hours if one gets very wet.
- Do not leave a blanket exposed to rain or pooled water on the assumption that a water-repellent shell will protect the fill.
These prevention and airing practices are drawn from sleeping-bag guidance and applied cautiously to blankets; follow the blanket maker’s instructions where they differ. See REI’s sleeping-bag care guide.

How to wash and dry a down blanket
- Check the care label first. Follow the blanket maker’s instructions for whether and how to wash it.
- Spot-clean when practical. Avoid a universal washing schedule; the maker’s guidance and the item’s condition should determine when a full wash is needed.
- Use a down-specific cleaner if washing is allowed. REI names Nikwax Down Wash Direct as an example and warns that standard detergent can contribute to clumping or reduced loft.
- Rinse thoroughly. REI recommends at least two rinses to remove cleaning-agent residue that could inhibit loft.
- Support the wet blanket’s weight. Down holds substantial water. Lifting a soaked item from one end can stress seams; this is cautious handling advice adapted from sleeping-bag care guidance.
- Tumble-dry on low heat only if the label permits. Check often. REI recommends two or three clean tennis balls to help break up clumps and notes that down can take several hours to dry thoroughly. Patagonia also recommends low heat and clean tennis balls for down garments.
- Store it completely dry and loose. Avoid prolonged compression. Do not use watertight storage that could trap condensation.
What to expect if the blanket gets wet
Wetting down does not necessarily damage the down itself, but wet fill provides very little insulation and must be dried completely to reduce the risk of mildew. Patagonia’s 2011 down-care article describes wet down as having “virtually zero insulation properties”; that is editorial guidance, not a measured blanket test. If the blanket is soaked, prioritize getting it dry rather than assuming its water-resistant treatment will preserve warmth.
