Keep a verified copy offline, never share or enter secret words on an untrusted site or app, and use the Helium Wallet app’s PIN as a device-access safeguard—not as a substitute for a backup. A Ledger setup is another option for holding and signing with HNT, but it does not support every Helium Hotspot task.
Protect your recovery phrase and private key
A recovery phrase can restore the wallet’s private key and control access to its tokens, NFTs, and associated Hotspots. A private key likewise grants control of the account. Treat either as a master credential: never share it, photograph it for cloud storage, or enter it into an untrusted website or app. Helium says its support team does not need your key to diagnose a Hotspot or verify an on-chain transaction, and warns that offers to recover a lost phrase should be ignored. Helium Wallet app guidance and Helium’s seed phrase guidance provide the official instructions.
Helium’s documentation states: “Never give seed phrase words to anyone who cannot be trusted with full control of your Hotspots and token balances.” This is the practical test for any request: sharing the phrase is equivalent to handing over control.
Record the words accurately and keep an offline backup
New accounts created in the Helium Wallet app use 24 words. Older accounts created with the Helium Hotspot app may use 12 words, and the Helium Wallet app accepts both lengths. Write every word in its exact order and verify spelling. Helium says it cannot recover a lost, forgotten, or misplaced phrase, so losing the only copy can mean permanently losing access.

Helium advises against keeping the phrase in cloud storage such as Google Drive or Dropbox. A securely stored paper copy is one option; a durable engraved backup, such as a titanium plate, is another. These are storage approaches, not endorsements of a particular product, and neither makes the phrase safe to disclose. Keep the backup somewhere protected from unauthorized access and physical damage.
Helium publishes the following estimates for phrase strength: a 12-word phrase has 128 bits of entropy and approximately 3.4 × 1038 possible combinations; a 24-word phrase has 256 bits and approximately 1.16 × 1077 combinations. These are Helium Documentation’s undated estimates, not independent security test results. The key practical point is that the phrase’s length does not protect it once someone obtains the words.

Reveal a phrase or private key only when necessary
The Helium Wallet app can display a phrase or private key in its settings while you are logged in. Treat that screen as highly sensitive: anyone who sees or copies the credential can take control. Do not reveal it to troubleshoot an account, claim an airdrop, redeem a reward, or receive support. If a task requires exporting credentials, first confirm that the destination and procedure are in current official instructions.
Use the Helium Wallet app’s PIN controls
The app’s PIN controls help restrict access to the wallet on the device. They do not recover an account if the app is removed, the device is lost, or you are logged out. Keep the recovery phrase backed up independently.

Helium documents these security settings for the Wallet app:
- Enable PIN: turn on a PIN for app access.
- Require PIN: choose when the app requires it—immediately, after 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 4 hours.
- Require PIN for Payments: require the PIN before payments.
- Reset PIN: change the PIN through the app’s settings.
Each imported account has separate settings. Account settings also include an alias, a default-account toggle, address copy/share functions, and Remove Wallet. Helium notes that removing a wallet or logging out requires the original phrase to restore it, so confirm your backup before removing an account.

Should you use a Ledger with HNT?
Helium documents support for Ledger hardware wallets through the Solana app. HNT, MOBILE, and IOT are Solana SPL tokens. With the documented setup, a Ledger can be used to view addresses and balances, transfer tokens, and sign transactions. Helium says these tokens are not supported directly in Ledger Live; do not mistake support through Ledger’s Solana app for direct Ledger Live support. A hardware wallet changes where transaction signing happens, but it does not make a disclosed recovery phrase safe. Never share the hardware wallet’s recovery phrase or enter it into an untrusted app. Helium’s documentation does not establish a model-by-model comparison, so check current compatibility and setup guidance for your specific device.

Understand public addresses and secret credentials
You can share your public wallet address to receive tokens. It is not a secret key and, according to Helium, cannot be used to derive the private key. However, anyone with the address can inspect its token balances, Hotspots, and associated on-chain history. Share it only if you are comfortable making that activity visible.
Keep the distinction clear: an address is for receiving and public lookup; the seed phrase and private key authorize control. If someone asks for the latter to send you HNT, the request is not necessary for receiving funds.
Why imported HNT may not appear in another wallet
Helium migrated to Solana on April 18, 2023. Its instructions explain that importing a Helium Wallet seed phrase into another Solana wallet may derive a different account because the Helium Wallet app uses a different derivation path. As a result, the other wallet may show no HNT even when you used the correct phrase.
Helium’s documented method for importing the account into a third-party wallet uses the account’s private key. That is a high-risk operation: entering or copying the private key gives the destination full account control. Follow Helium’s current third-party wallet instructions only if you understand the exposure; do not repeatedly enter your recovery phrase into different apps to troubleshoot. Some specialized Hotspot actions may also remain unavailable in third-party wallets.
Plan for Solana transaction fees
Some complex Solana actions require SOL for transaction fees or account rent. A transaction that needs to create token accounts can fail if the wallet does not have enough SOL. This is an operational funding requirement, not a security setting; consult Helium’s SOL token guidance when a transaction reports insufficient SOL.
