If privacy is your priority, block third-party cookies and make exceptions only for sites whose features stop working. For Safe Browsing, choose between Standard protection and Enhanced protection based on how you weigh stronger warnings against sharing more browsing data with Google.
Chrome’s setting names and availability can vary by version, managed-device policies, and parental controls. The paths below follow Google’s Android Chrome documentation, verified October 4, 2026.
Keep Safe Browsing on, and choose a protection level
Safe Browsing warns about dangerous sites and downloads. Google recommends keeping it enabled; turning it off removes protection against sites that try to steal information or install harmful software. To choose a level, open Chrome → More → Settings → Privacy and security → Safe Browsing.
| Level | What it does | Data-sharing trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Standard protection | Checks sites and downloads against known threats. Chrome sends additional data when it detects evidence of a security incident. | For some checks, Chrome sends an obfuscated portion of a URL through a privacy server that hides your IP address before forwarding it to Google. Google’s documentation says Google and the privacy-server operator cannot associate a real URL with your IP address from that exchange. This does not mean all browsing is private from Google. |
| Enhanced protection | Provides stronger, more personalized warnings, including for sites Google may not already know. | Chrome sends more information to Google in real time, which can include URLs, small samples of page content, downloads, extension activity, and system information. Google says it uses this information to improve protection. |
Choose Enhanced if you prefer the additional protection and accept the extra data sharing. Choose Standard if you want protection with less data sent in the circumstances Google describes for Enhanced. Either is preferable to switching Safe Browsing off.

Turn on Always use secure connections
Go to Chrome → More → Settings → Privacy and security, then turn on Always use secure connections under Security. Chrome upgrades URLs to HTTPS where possible and warns before opening a site that does not support it. Google describes the feature this way: “When you turn on Always use secure connections, Chrome upgrades URLs to use HTTPS and displays a warning before you visit a site that doesn’t support it.”
Choose which sites trigger warnings
- Public sites only: The narrower warning scope.
- Public and private sites: Also warns about private sites, which may include a company intranet.
A warning is a reason to pause and assess the connection, not proof that a site is malicious. A site that does not support HTTPS may show a “Not Secure” or “Connection is not secure” warning. See Google’s Android instructions for managing Chrome safety and security and its guide to checking whether a site’s connection is secure.

Leave Use secure DNS enabled; know how its modes differ
Find Chrome → More → Settings → Privacy and security → Use secure DNS under Security. Secure DNS encrypts information during DNS lookups—the process used to find a site’s network address. It does not hide all browsing activity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Mode | Fallback behavior | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic (the default, according to Google) | Can fall back to an unencrypted lookup if Chrome has trouble resolving a site. | Leaves secure DNS enabled while allowing Chrome to try a regular lookup when needed. |
| Custom provider | Does not use that fallback. | A provider or lookup problem can make some sites fail to resolve. Check the provider or turn secure DNS off if a site stops resolving. |
Managed-device policies or parental controls may prevent secure DNS from being used. Google explains the setting in its Android Chrome safety and security instructions.
Review site permissions and grant them for a specific task
Open Chrome → More → Settings → Site settings to review permissions. For one site, open it, tap the page-information icon to the left of the address bar, then tap Permissions. You can review location, camera, microphone, notifications, and local-network access, and change or reset a site’s permissions.

- Allow location for a task such as finding nearby places; location access may be approximate or precise.
- Allow camera or microphone when using a feature such as a video call, then revoke access if you no longer need it.
- Review notification grants and local-network access; allow them only when the site and task justify them.
Blocking every permission globally can break useful features. Google’s documentation says visited sites must ask before sending notifications by default. Safety Check can also surface permission issues, including notification permissions it may remove for sites identified as deceptive. See Google’s guide to changing site settings permissions on Android.

Third-party cookies can be used across sites, but blocking them can also interfere with some site features. Go to Chrome → More → Settings → Site settings → Third-party cookies; on some versions, the control may appear under Privacy and security. Available choices include allowing cookies, blocking them in Incognito, or blocking them generally.

Blocking cookies is different from deleting them. Deleting stored cookies can sign you out and remove saved site preferences; Chrome also lets you delete stored data for a single site. Google’s Android cookie instructions cover these controls and their effects.
Run Safety Check and address what it finds
Open Chrome → More → Settings → Safety check. Google says Safety Check can remind you to update Chrome, review potentially unwanted notification grants, and address abusive notifications removed from sites Safe Browsing identifies as deceptive. Treat it as a useful review, not a guarantee that Chrome has found every vulnerability or threat. The feature is covered in Google’s Android safety and security instructions.
Do Not Track is a request, not a blocker
Chrome’s Android Do Not Track control is off by default. When enabled, it sends sites a request not to collect or track browsing data. What happens depends on each site’s response; Google says most websites and services, including Google’s, do not change their behavior when they receive it. Do not treat the signal as a substitute for reviewing permissions and cookie settings. See Google’s instructions for turning Do Not Track on or off.
