Usually, you need a way to build or publish your site and a service that makes it available online. A custom domain—the address people type to find you—is optional, and buying one does not create or host a website. Depending on your publishing route, a single platform may bundle the builder and hosting, or you may arrange those services separately.

What you actually need to put a website online

Every public website needs content served from somewhere: a hosted platform, a web host, or another publishing service. You also need a way to create and publish that content. Those functions may be bundled together or handled by separate providers.

A domain name is a separate matter. It is an address in the Domain Name System, not the website itself. As ICANN explains, a domain name is not the same thing as a website or a URL. Registering a name does not supply the pages visitors will see; the name must point to content served by a host or platform.

Domain registration and hosting are distinct functions even when one company sells both. A registrar handles registration of the name, while a host keeps the website available online. You can use different providers for each. ICANN’s registration guide explains how domain registration works, and Cloudflare’s domain documentation covers domain management.

Choose a publishing route before buying services

The right purchase depends on how you plan to build and maintain the site. Check what a platform includes before paying separately for a builder, hosting, or domain services.

Hosted website builder or all-in-one platform

A hosted builder may combine the editing tools and hosting in one service, and may offer domain services as well. This is often the simplest arrangement if you want to build pages through a visual interface rather than manage server software. Before choosing a plan, compare its included features, support, custom-domain options, renewal price, and ability to export or migrate your site. Prices and plan features vary, so check the provider’s current terms rather than relying on a general price estimate.

Static-site hosting

If your site can be published from files or a code repository, a static-site service may be suitable. GitHub Pages describes publishing a site directly from a GitHub repository; Cloudflare also documents Pages hosting for JAMstack sites in its domain documentation. Compare the publishing workflow, custom-domain support, limits, and whether you are comfortable working with files or source control. Some options may serve an appropriate small site without a paid hosting plan, but confirm the provider’s current quotas and terms.

Self-managed WordPress

With self-managed WordPress, you arrange compatible hosting and install and maintain the software yourself. WordPress.org currently recommends a host supporting PHP 8.3 or later, MariaDB 10.11 or MySQL 8.0 or later, and HTTPS; Apache or Nginx is recommended. Check the current WordPress requirements and the host’s actual specifications before buying. Also compare backups, security features, support, and renewal terms.

Which purchases are required—and which are optional?

Item When you need it What to check
Website builder or publishing tools You need a way to create and publish site content. These tools may be part of a hosted platform or a separate workflow. Whether editing, publishing, and any needed features are included in the plan.
Hosting or platform plan You need a service that serves your site online. Whether you pay separately depends on the route you choose. Compatibility with your site, limits, HTTPS support, backups, support, and renewal terms.
Custom domain Optional. Buy or register one if you want a particular address; some platforms also provide an address for a published site. Renewal cost, extension registration rules, privacy options, and DNS controls. A registrar and host can be different companies.
Separate SSL/TLS certificate Not automatically required as a separate purchase. Your site should support HTTPS, but the certificate may be included by the platform or host. Confirm that HTTPS is supported for the domain you intend to use. Cloudflare says it offers free Universal SSL certificates for Cloudflare domains, and Let’s Encrypt documents an automated TLS certificate issuance process.
Computer, dedicated server, or router Not established as a necessary purchase for a typical hosted setup. Most beginners should first choose a hosted publishing route rather than assume they need new hardware.
Business email, premium themes, plugins, backups, or professional design Optional, depending on the site’s purpose and needs. Decide separately whether a specific feature or service is necessary for your site.

How to choose a domain and hosting plan

  1. Decide how you will build and publish. Choose a hosted builder, static-site workflow, or self-managed WordPress. This determines whether services are bundled or need separate arrangements.
  2. List the site’s actual requirements. For example, self-managed WordPress needs a host compatible with its current software requirements. A simple static site may have different needs.
  3. Check what the platform already includes. Verify whether hosting, a platform-provided address, custom-domain support, HTTPS, backups, and support are part of the plan or cost extra.
  4. Register a custom domain only if you want one. For generic top-level domains, registration is through accredited registrars or their resellers; country-code domains use their operators, as ICANN notes. Compare renewal costs and check the extension’s registration rules.
  5. Compare the full recurring cost and terms. Include renewals and any separately charged features, not just an introductory offer. Domain prices vary by extension and registrar; hosting and builder prices depend on plan, capacity, and included features.
  6. Connect the domain if you bought one. Follow the platform’s instructions to point the domain to the published site, then confirm that the site loads over HTTPS.

What should you budget?

There is no reliable universal total: costs depend on the domain extension and registrar, the hosting or builder plan, renewal terms, and features your site needs. Review each provider’s live pricing and terms before committing; prices, plan limits, and free-tier conditions can change.
