A louder PS5 Slim fan during a demanding game can be normal: PlayStation says the fan may temporarily run faster to cool the console. The most useful steps are simple—keep the vents clear, leave at least 10 cm of open space around each side, and unplug the console before vacuuming dust from the vents.
A replaceable CMOS battery is a different question. Video Games Chronicle reported on 2 October 2026 that a technician found a replaceable CR2032 battery and revised cooling in a newly revised PS5 Slim. That teardown does not establish which model numbers or regions have those changes, so it is not a universal Slim specification or a replacement guide.
How PS5 Slim cooling works in everyday use
The cooling system moves heat out of the console, and the fan may become more audible when a game or application puts the system under greater load. PlayStation Support says, “During some games and applications, you may find that your PlayStation®5 console’s cooling fan operates louder than usual.” It explains that the fan may temporarily run faster to cool the system. Noise alone, therefore, does not establish that the console is overheating.
Sony’s design explanation for the original PS5 describes a large cooling fan and optimized airflow channels intended to move air through the console while limiting distracting noise. That is useful context for the design goal, not a detailed airflow diagram for the Slim. Likewise, iFixit’s teardown describes the original PS5’s 120 mm fan, dust ports, heat pipes and heatsink; those observations should not be treated as a hardware map for the CFI-2000 Slim group or a later revision.

How to give a PS5 Slim enough airflow
- Leave at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the console, as PlayStation Support recommends.
- Keep the vents unobstructed and clear of accumulated dust.
- Avoid placing the console on long-fibre carpet or in a cramped space, including a closed cabinet that traps heat.
- If you hear louder fan operation during demanding play, first check placement and ventilation rather than assuming a fault.
Sony’s CFI-2015 Slim Safety Guide warns against using the console in a closed cabinet or other heat-trapping location. It also says incorrectly installed covers can cause overheating. If you remove a cover for an allowed task, let the console cool first and reinstall the cover correctly.
How to clean dust from the vents safely
- Turn off the PS5 Slim and unplug its AC power cable before cleaning.
- Use a low-powered vacuum around the vents to remove dust. PlayStation Support recommends this method.
- Do not use cleaning as a reason to disassemble the console or cooling assembly. Sony’s safety guidance warns against disassembling or modifying the product; electrical-shock servicing should be left to qualified personnel.
The CFI-2015 guide provides cover-handling instructions, but it does not give a coin-cell replacement procedure or document the Slim’s detailed thermal architecture.

Does the PS5 Slim have a replaceable CMOS battery?
Possibly, depending on the exact revision—but the available report does not establish a model-number or regional map. On 2 October 2026, VGC reported that console technician and modder Modyfikator89 opened a new Limited Edition Wolverine PS5 Slim and found a new motherboard layout. According to VGC’s account of the teardown, the CR2032 CMOS battery could be removed and replaced more easily, and the cooling assembly had also changed, including its liquid-metal interface and heatsink.
These are teardown observations attributed to a technician, not an official Sony specification for every PS5 Slim. The reported changes should not be assumed to apply to a console just because it is sold as a Slim, and Sony’s reviewed CFI-2015 safety guide does not provide battery-replacement steps. Before buying a CR2032 or opening a console, confirm its precise model and revision and find instructions that match it.

Why the coin-cell battery matters—and why the Pro guide is not a Slim guide
Sony’s PS5 Pro CFI-7021 Safety Guide explains that replacing that model’s coin battery resets the console’s time and date. It specifies a commercially available CR2032 lithium coin battery, installed positive side up. This confirms the practical role and battery type for that Pro model only; it does not establish the Slim’s access procedure or prove that every Slim uses a user-replaceable cell.
Do not copy the Pro’s opening or replacement procedure for a Slim without matching official instructions. Sony advises owners to unplug the console and let it cool before removing covers, and warns against disassembly or modification. If a repair requires deeper access than the model-specific owner guidance provides, use qualified service rather than treating internal battery or cooling work as routine maintenance.

Does an M.2 SSD need a heatsink in a PS5 Slim?
An M.2 SSD is a separate heat source from the console’s main processor and fan system. Sony’s storage guidance for the CFI-2000/7000 group requires an M.2 SSD to have effective heat dissipation—such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet—unless the drive already has an integrated cooling structure. The drive and cooler must also fit Sony’s stated size limits.
Before installing storage, check whether the SSD includes a heatsink and confirm that the drive-plus-cooler dimensions meet the console’s requirements. An SSD heatsink manages heat from the storage device; it does not improve the PS5 Slim’s APU or fan cooling.
