Before you Powerwash or recover a Chromebook, copy any files you need to Google Drive or compatible external storage and verify the copies are there. Both procedures erase local data: a Powerwash deletes files in Downloads, and ChromeOS recovery erases the hard drive while reinstalling the operating system.
What gets erased by a Powerwash or recovery?
A Powerwash is a factory reset. Google says it erases all user data on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including files in Downloads; files already stored in Google Drive or on external storage are not erased by the reset. See Google’s Chromebook factory-reset guidance.
ChromeOS recovery is a separate process for reinstalling the operating system when it is seriously damaged. It also permanently erases everything on the hard drive, including downloaded files. Google recommends backing up first when possible; see Recover your Chromebook.
Find and copy files stored on the Chromebook
- Open the Files app. Review My files, especially Downloads, and check any other local folders where you keep documents, photos, or work.
- Choose a destination. Copy files to Google Drive or a compatible external storage device. Make sure the destination has enough available space and, for Drive, that you have an internet connection to upload the files.
- Verify the copy. Open the destination and confirm the files appear there. Open a few important files to check that they are accessible before you begin the reset or recovery.
- Keep the backup separate from recovery media. If you plan to create USB recovery media, use a separate drive from your file backup. The recovery process erases the USB drive used to create the media.
Downloads are stored on the Chromebook by default, rather than automatically being backed up. Google also notes that a Chromebook may automatically delete downloaded files when local storage is low, so Downloads should not be treated as a durable backup. See Google’s guidance on finding and managing files and storage management.

Choose Google Drive or external storage
| Option | Works well when | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive | You have enough cloud space and can upload the files over the internet. | Confirm uploads have finished and the files appear in Drive. A file visible in Drive is not necessarily stored offline on the Chromebook; offline availability uses separate settings and selection. See Google Drive offline access guidance. |
| External storage | You want a local copy, have a large collection, or need access without an internet connection. | Check that the Chromebook recognizes the device and that it has enough free space. Compatibility can vary by Chromebook and ChromeOS version. Formatting an unsupported drive erases its contents, so never format the only copy of important files. See Google’s external-storage guidance. |
A USB drive advertised as at least 8 GB is the minimum requirement for USB recovery media, not a universal capacity recommendation for file backups. Choose backup storage according to the amount of data you need to preserve.
Back up Linux files and apps separately
If you use the Linux development environment, include its data in a separate backup. ChromeOS provides a Linux backup-and-restore workflow; save the resulting backup file somewhere safe, such as Drive or external storage. A restore to another Chromebook requires the same architecture, such as x86 or ARM. Follow Google’s Linux backup and restore instructions.

Keep a file backup separate from ChromeOS recovery media
A file backup preserves documents and downloads. Recovery media reinstalls ChromeOS; it is not a backup of your personal files. Creating or reusing a recovery USB drive erases that drive, so do not keep your only backup on the drive you intend to use for recovery.

Start the reset or recovery only after verification
For Powerwash, Google’s process is to sign out, use the reset shortcut, choose Powerwash, and follow the on-screen setup steps. The exact flow may vary with the Chromebook and ChromeOS version; consult Google’s reset instructions.
Use recovery when ChromeOS needs to be removed and reinstalled because of serious operating-system damage. If the Chromebook belongs to a school or workplace, contact its administrator before resetting or recovering it; management policies may affect what you can do.
