Choose antivirus by comparing recent independent tests of real-world and prevalent malware—including Trojan horses—then weigh performance and usability alongside protection. For Windows, include Microsoft Defender Antivirus in the comparison; the available evidence does not show that every user needs a paid replacement. Keep antivirus as one layer of security, not a substitute for updates and careful handling of files and links.
What Trojan protection means
A Trojan disguises its true content to make a user think it is harmless. CISA’s NICCS glossary defines antivirus as software that monitors for malicious code and may prevent or contain malware incidents. Read the CISA/NICCS glossary.
Microsoft says Defender Antivirus tries to block malware before it infects a device. That is a description of its intended role, not a guarantee that it will block every Trojan. Microsoft’s overview of unwanted software protection.
How to compare antivirus products
Do not choose on a single generic “detection rate” or a long feature list. Check what an independent test measured, when it ran, which operating system and product version it covered, and how the product performed in the categories that matter to you.

| Comparison area | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Threat protection | Recent independent results for real-world and prevalent malware, including whether Trojan horses were in scope; confirm the operating system and product version. | These categories speak more directly to Trojan protection than a feature list alone. |
| Performance | Independent testing of impact on everyday tasks and background activity. | Security software runs alongside normal use, so system impact is part of the trade-off. AV-Comparatives publishes a consumer performance test; its results apply to that test period and setup, not every computer. See the April 2026 performance test. |
| Usability | False alarms, interruptions, and how easily you can manage protection. | Disruptive warnings or controls can make a product harder to live with. AV-TEST reports usability separately from protection and performance. |
| Offline and restricted connectivity | Whether the product’s protection remains suitable when cloud connectivity is unavailable or limited. | AV-Comparatives identifies local capability and offline protection as dimensions on which products can differ. |
| Other features | Phishing protection or extras only when they fit your actual needs. | A larger feature count does not by itself establish stronger Trojan protection. |
| Cost and fit | Total cost, device coverage, and whether you will use the included features. | The cited test sources do not establish current prices or a need to pay for every use case. |
AV-TEST scores protection, performance, and usability separately, with up to 6 points in each category. That is a three-part scoring scale, not a malware-detection percentage. Its Windows home-user results page shows August 2026 results; its April 2026 Microsoft Defender entry for Windows 11 describes testing that included Trojan horses and real-world and prevalent-malware categories, as well as usability impact.
Use results as dated evidence rather than a permanent winner label. Tests may differ in scope and conditions, and results change. Do not transfer a finding from one test period or operating system to another without stating that distinction.

Is Microsoft Defender enough, or should you pay for another product?
Windows users can compare Microsoft Defender Antivirus with third-party products using the same criteria: relevant threat-test results, performance, usability, offline needs, and features they will actually use. Defender appears in AV-TEST’s Windows consumer comparisons, and the April 2026 Windows 11 test entry assessed it against Trojan horses and other malware. Those facts do not establish a universal winner or prove that every Windows user needs paid antivirus.
AV-Comparatives describes areas where products can differ, including detection consistency, offline protection, performance, phishing coverage, and feature depth. Treat these as questions to investigate, not proof that a particular named product is better without a directly relevant, dated comparison. What to do beyond installing antivirus
Antivirus is one part of a broader security approach. CISA and FBI guidance pairs it with patch management and other defenses. See the CISA/FBI guidance.

A practical selection checklist
- Confirm the product supports your operating system and the version you use.
- Find recent independent tests that cover relevant malware categories, including Trojans; note the test date, scope, and product version.
- Compare protection with performance and usability results rather than treating one score as the whole verdict.
- Consider offline operation, phishing coverage, or bundled extras only if they address your use case.
- Compare device coverage and total cost with the features you expect to use, without assuming that paid software is automatically stronger.
