Yes. Valve’s September 14, 2026 update adds standalone gameplay support for Half-Life: Alyx on Steam Frame, so you do not need a separate PC to run the updated game in that mode. This is specific to Steam Frame; it does not mean that every Steam game runs standalone.
How Alyx runs on Steam Frame
In standalone mode, the game runs on Steam Frame itself rather than on a computer sending it over a wireless connection. Valve’s September 14, 2026 changelog says the update “adds support for Steam Frame standalone gameplay.” The update describes substantial rendering and performance optimizations, foveated rendering support, an ARM64/aarch64 port, and depth reprojection intended to support smoother play at lower frame rates. Valve does not publish a specific frame-rate result or performance benchmark for Alyx in the update.
Standalone play versus PC streaming
Valve describes two distinct ways to use Steam Frame with Steam games. Only standalone play removes the need for a separate PC to run Alyx.

Valve says Steam Frame can stream a Steam library from a PC and describes an included wireless adapter for a dedicated PC link. That streaming arrangement is separate from standalone Alyx: the update does not identify a PC or the adapter as a requirement to run the game locally.

What Steam Frame’s specifications tell you
Valve describes Steam Frame as a SteamOS device with standalone capability. Its published specifications list a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, ARM64 architecture, 16GB of unified LPDDR5X memory, and UFS storage options of 256GB or 1TB. Those specifications describe the headset; they are not a substitute for a published Alyx frame-rate or image-quality test.
Why the Steam page still shows PC requirements
Half-Life: Alyx remains a VR-only game. Its Steam listing says a VR headset is required and displays minimum requirements for PC play: Windows 10, an Intel Core i5-7500 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600, 12GB RAM, and a GTX 1060 or RX 580 with 6GB VRAM. Those Windows, processor, memory, and graphics-card figures are the listing’s PC requirements; they should not be read as Steam Frame’s requirements. Valve’s later update adds the separate Steam Frame standalone mode.

Does this mean other Steam games also run without a PC?
No. Valve describes standalone support as available for a growing number of games, not the entire Steam library, and points to its Steam Frame Standalone Verified program to identify library games that work standalone. The Alyx update establishes support for this game on Steam Frame specifically; it does not establish compatibility for other headsets or every Steam title.
