For a sharper PS5 picture, first make sure the console is outputting the best resolution your display supports. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, check Current Video Output Signal, and leave Resolution set to Automatic unless you have a specific compatibility reason to select another supported mode. Sony says Automatic selects the highest resolution the connected TV supports. HDR, 120 Hz, and VRR can improve other aspects of the picture or motion, but they are not universal sharpness switches.
Check resolution before changing other settings
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review Current Video Output Signal to see what the PS5 is sending, then keep Resolution on Automatic in most cases. Sony says the console detects the TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. A 4K output requires a compatible 4K display; Sony describes 4K as having almost four times the definition of 1080p HD.
If you use a compatible 1440p monitor or display and want to check that mode, select Test 1440p Output. The test checks combinations of SDR and HDR, 60 Hz and 120 Hz, and VRR. Choose a manual resolution only when it addresses a specific display or compatibility need—not because a lower number of output settings is inherently sharper. Sony’s PS5 resolution guide describes the available output controls.
Set HDR for the display and content you use
If your screen supports HDR, select Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen calibration prompts. HDR changes brightness, contrast, and color rendering; it does not increase resolution or guarantee sharper detail.

The HDR setting offers two relevant behaviors. On When Supported leaves non-HDR games and apps in SDR. Always On converts non-HDR games and apps to HDR output. Choose based on how you want SDR content rendered on your display; neither option is a general sharpness enhancement.
Leave RGB Range alone unless there is a signal mismatch
Do not change RGB Range as a routine picture-quality tweak. Sony advises changing it only when an HDMI device does not send RGB range information correctly. A mismatch can affect how dark and light levels appear, but changing the range without a reason can make the picture worse. Sony’s guide gives the same caution for this control.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Deep Color Output enables smooth image rendering, according to Sony, but it is not a universal sharpness fix. Keep color-output changes tied to a specific display or signal problem rather than cycling through them to seek extra detail.
Use 120 Hz and VRR for supported games and displays
Enable 120 Hz Output only if both the screen and the game support a 120 Hz frame rate. Some screens can have problems with 120 Hz output; if a game loses or disrupts the signal, turn the option off for troubleshooting.

VRR adjusts the display’s refresh rate in real time when supported by the TV and game. It can help motion and frame pacing, but the result varies by TV and it does not add static-image detail. Sony also allows VRR to be applied to unsupported games; if that causes unexpected behavior, disable it.
Use Video Transfer Rate only to troubleshoot flicker
Keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic unless the image flickers and you need to test a signal issue. In that case, try -1 first, then -2 if needed. Sony says these settings limit the output signal and may improve picture quality when flickering occurs, but they also restrict available output formats:
Rank #4
- Ultra Customizable Controls
- Mappable Back Buttons
- DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
- -1: limits 4K at 120 Hz and some 4K at 50/60 Hz RGB or YUV444 Deep Color output.
- -2: applies greater restrictions, including 4K at 50/60 Hz RGB or YUV444; 4K at 50/60 Hz uses YUV420.
These are compatibility and stability options, not normal sharpness presets. If changing them resolves flicker, the tradeoff is reduced output-format availability.
Check PSSR only on supported PS5 models and games
Enhance PSSR Image Quality is available only on PS5 consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. It is on by default and applies only to certain PSSR-compatible games, so it is not a general graphics setting available across all PS5 models. Check it when playing a supported game on a qualifying console; turn it off if it causes unexpected behavior.

Troubleshoot a picture that is not reaching the expected output
If the PS5 is not delivering the resolution or refresh rate your screen supports, check the full signal path before changing color settings. The selected TV HDMI input, television firmware, receiver or other intermediary equipment, and cable can all affect 4K at 120 Hz output.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display where practical, then confirm that you are using an HDMI input that supports the desired resolution and refresh rate.
- Check the display’s firmware and the PS5’s Current Video Output Signal.
- If you need 4K at 120 Hz and the existing cable cannot provide a supported signal, Sony lists the included cable or a suitably rated Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable among the checks.
- Only if the signal flickers, test Video Transfer Rate at -1 and then -2, noting that these settings limit output formats.
A cable change is relevant when the signal is not stable or the desired output is unavailable. It will not sharpen a picture that is already displaying a stable, supported signal.
Which settings matter for sharpness?
| Setting or factor | What it can affect | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Output resolution and displayed detail | Usually leave on Automatic; use a supported manual mode for a specific compatibility need. |
| HDR and Adjust HDR | Dynamic range and rendering, not resolution | Calibrate for an HDR display and choose whether non-HDR content stays SDR or is converted. |
| RGB Range | How the display interprets the RGB signal range | Only when HDMI equipment is not communicating the range correctly. |
| 120 Hz and VRR | Motion, refresh behavior, and frame pacing | Only with compatible screen/game support and a stable signal. |
| Video Transfer Rate | Signal stability and available output formats | Try reduced rates only to troubleshoot flickering. |
| Enhance PSSR Image Quality | Image quality in certain PSSR-compatible games | Only on CFI-7000 model-group consoles. |
The right setup depends on three things: what the display can show, what the game supports, and whether the HDMI signal is stable. If resolution is already at the display’s supported maximum and the output is stable, changing unrelated settings is unlikely to make a static image sharper.
