Yes—Android still allows APK installs from outside Google Play. What Android restricts depends on the device and the install: Android 8.0 and later asks you to authorize the specific app opening the APK, while newer Android versions, device administrators, or the app itself can impose separate limits. Those checks are not a single blanket ban on sideloading.
What Android means by sideloading restrictions
Sideloading means installing an Android app from an APK obtained outside Google Play. It remains supported: Google’s Android App Bundle FAQ says, “AABs do not prevent users from installing APKs from any source.” An APK also needs a cryptographic signature to be installable. When an install fails, the cause may be a source permission, an Android-version compatibility rule, a device-management policy, an app’s own licensing check, or a problem with the APK. Identifying which gate applies is more useful than treating every message as Android blocking sideloading.
How to allow an APK install
Android 8.0 and later
- Open the APK using the browser, file manager, or other app that started the download or install.
- If Android prompts you to allow installs, open the system’s Install unknown apps controls for that source app and grant permission.
- Return to the APK and continue in the package installer.
- Afterward, you can revisit the same controls to change or revoke that source app’s permission.
The authorization applies to the app initiating the installation—not to every app on the phone. The exact Settings route and wording vary by manufacturer and software build, so use the prompt or search Settings for “Install unknown apps” rather than relying on one universal menu path. Android 7.1.1 and earlier

Which restrictions can block an APK?

What Android 15 changes—and what it does not
On Android 15, a new install of an app targeting a version below API 24 is blocked. That is a minimum-target compatibility restriction, not a new general ban on apps installed outside Google Play. What developer verification means for APK downloads
As of October 4, 2026, Google’s published rollout says protections began September 30, 2026 for installs through participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand on certified Android 7 or later devices. Google’s FAQ distinguishes that initial stage from direct sideloads and stores outside that initial list; it describes global expansion as planned for 2027. This is a staged rollout, not a blanket September 2026 ban on direct APK downloads. Actual prompts and coverage depend on factors including region, store, device certification, developer verification status, and rollout state. - Check the source first. Install only if you trust the publisher and the place distributing the APK. Google Play is not the only distribution channel, but an unfamiliar source adds questions about who signed the app and who will provide updates.
- Confirm source permission. On Android 8.0 or later, check the Install unknown apps permission for the browser or file manager that opened the file.
- Check Android and device compatibility. Confirm that the app supports your device and operating-system version. On Android 15, a newly installed app targeting below API 24 is blocked.
- Check whether the device is managed. If it belongs to an employer or school, an administrator may have disabled unknown-source installs.
- Separate installation from post-install checks. If the app installs but later reports a licensing or integrity problem, contact its publisher; changing Android’s source permission may not resolve an app-level decision.
Do not disable protections as a routine fix. If you cannot establish that an APK is authentic and intended for your device, choose a distribution source maintained by the app’s publisher instead.
