Vanadium is the better default for GrapheneOS users who prioritize the operating system’s browser hardening and integration. Brave Origin is a reasonable alternative if you value Brave Shields’ built-in ad and tracker blocking and prefer a more feature-limited version of Brave. The two browsers address different priorities; the available official documentation does not establish one as universally best.
How do Vanadium and Brave Origin differ on GrapheneOS?
| Priority | Vanadium | Brave Origin |
|---|---|---|
| GrapheneOS integration | GrapheneOS’s default browser and WebView provider; some WebView uses inherit a subset of Vanadium’s hardening. GrapheneOS features | A separate browser. GrapheneOS lists Brave in its instructions for one WebUSB installation workflow, provided Shields is disabled; that is not a general recommendation. GrapheneOS web installer |
| Security architecture | GrapheneOS documents strict site and origin isolation and additional Chromium exploit mitigations. These reduce some risks but do not guarantee protection from every vulnerability. GrapheneOS usage guide | Brave says Origin receives Chromium patches and ongoing security improvements. The reviewed official documentation does not establish that it has Vanadium’s GrapheneOS-specific hardening. Brave Origin announcement |
| Blocking and features | GrapheneOS emphasizes browser security architecture. It cautions that extensions and modifications can add fingerprinting and state; that is the project’s rationale, not proof that every extension is harmful. GrapheneOS usage guide | Origin retains Brave Shields’ ad and tracker blocking while disabling or removing selected Brave features. Brave Origin announcement |
| Cookie partitioning | GrapheneOS says cookie partitioning is still being tested because of compatibility problems. GrapheneOS FAQ | GrapheneOS says Brave uses heuristics to disable partitioning for some cross-site login flows. GrapheneOS FAQ |
| Cost and Android availability | No Brave Origin purchase applies. | Brave’s June 4, 2026 announcement lists a one-time US$59.99 purchase. On Android, Origin is an upgrade to Brave 1.91 and later, not a separate app. Price and availability can change; check Brave’s current listing. Brave Origin announcement |
| Data handling | GrapheneOS documents Vanadium’s default and user-initiated connections, and says WebView itself does not make connections beyond those initiated by the app using it. GrapheneOS FAQ | Brave says it does not collect or retain browsing history, while its Android policy describes feature-specific processing. Its Android Safe Browsing flow can expose the device IP address to Google. Brave Browser Privacy Policy |
Why choose Vanadium?
It is built into the GrapheneOS experience
Vanadium is both the operating system’s default browser and its WebView provider. WebView lets apps display web content inside the app rather than opening a full browser. Some apps therefore benefit from a subset of Vanadium’s hardening even when you are not browsing in Vanadium itself. GrapheneOS features

GrapheneOS documents specific hardening
The project describes strict site and origin isolation in Vanadium alongside additional Chromium exploit mitigations. Isolation helps keep websites’ data and execution more separated; exploit mitigations are intended to make certain attacks harder. These are concrete architecture features, not a guarantee that Vanadium cannot have vulnerabilities or that it will outperform Brave in every security scenario. GrapheneOS usage guide
GrapheneOS also advises against treating a pile of extensions as a substitute for privacy or security. Extensions and modifications can add browser state and make a setup more distinctive, though the project’s caution does not mean every extension is necessarily harmful. GrapheneOS usage guide

What does Brave Origin add—and remove?
Brave Origin is a paid configuration of Brave, not a separate Android browser. Brave’s announcement says Android users can upgrade the existing Brave app on version 1.91 or later; the announcement lists a one-time US$59.99 purchase. That price and availability are time-sensitive, so check Brave’s current store listing for your region. Brave Origin announcement
Brave says Origin keeps Shields, browser updates, Chromium patches, and ongoing security and privacy improvements. Its announcement says Origin disables or removes features including Email Aliases, Leo AI, News, Rewards, Speedreader, Talk, Tor, VPN, Wallet, Wayback Machine, Web Discovery Project, and certain usage-statistics mechanisms. Desktop Origin is listed separately; Brave says Linux users can access Origin for free. Brave Origin announcement
Brave says Origin purchase verification uses blind tokens based on Privacy Pass, so it can verify a valid purchase without learning the buyer’s identity. That describes Brave’s account of its system, rather than independent audit evidence. Brave Origin announcement
Does Brave block more ads than Vanadium?
Brave Origin retains Brave Shields’ built-in ad and tracker blocking, which makes it the more direct choice if you want that feature included in the browser. GrapheneOS’s Vanadium documentation centers on security architecture and does not establish an equivalent head-to-head blocking result. There is no controlled comparison here that supports a numerical claim about how many ads either browser blocks.

What do the privacy disclosures say?
GrapheneOS’s FAQ describes Vanadium’s default and user-initiated connections, and says WebView does not make connections beyond those initiated by the app that uses it. GrapheneOS FAQ
Brave’s privacy policy says the browser does not collect or retain browsing history, but that broad statement does not mean no feature involves data processing. The Android policy describes a Safe Browsing flow that can expose the device’s IP address to Google. Consider that specific disclosure alongside Brave’s general browsing-history statement rather than reducing the policy to a blanket claim about all data sharing. Brave Browser Privacy Policy
Is Brave generally recommended by GrapheneOS?
GrapheneOS’s web-installer instructions list Brave as compatible for that particular WebUSB workflow only when Shields is disabled, and advise against using private mode for the installer. This is limited installation guidance, not a general endorsement or browser recommendation. GrapheneOS web installer

Which browser should you use?
- Choose Vanadium if you want the default GrapheneOS browser, its WebView integration, and the project-documented isolation and exploit mitigations.
- Choose Brave Origin if you want Brave Shields’ built-in blocking and prefer Brave’s stripped-back feature set enough to pay for the Android upgrade.
- Choose free Brave if Brave’s features and Shields appeal to you but Origin’s paid, reduced-feature configuration does not.
These choices reflect different priorities, not a proven universal privacy or security ranking. GrapheneOS also notes that it is not affiliated with or endorsing companies that sell devices with GrapheneOS preinstalled; it recommends buying a supported device and installing the OS yourself.
