Keep money you may need soon in an account you can access; consider a certificate of deposit (CD) for money with a known future use date that falls at or after its maturity. Before opening one, check its rate, term, early-withdrawal rules, renewal terms, and deposit insurance coverage.
Should I lock in a CD rate or keep my cash accessible?
A CD is a savings account offered by banks and credit unions. In exchange for agreeing to leave your deposit for a specified term, you receive the account’s stated interest terms. Withdrawing early may mean a penalty or, for some products, may not be permitted. The right choice depends on when you expect to need the money and what the CD contract allows—not just on its advertised rate. The CFPB explains CD terms and comparison factors; the FDIC describes structures that can limit early access.
Keep cash accessible when the date is uncertain
Money for routine bills, near-term purchases, or emergencies generally belongs in an account that lets you withdraw it when needed. A savings account or other accessible deposit account avoids having to rely on a CD’s early-redemption provisions. The FDIC distinguishes accessible deposit accounts from CDs, which typically impose an early-withdrawal penalty. FDIC guidance on deposit accounts
Consider a CD when the spending date is known
If you have money set aside for a planned expense, such as a payment due after the CD matures, a CD may fit—provided you can leave the deposit untouched until then and accept the contract’s consequences if plans change. Match the maturity date to the expected expense, allowing for any time needed to access the funds after maturity.

How much should stay available for emergencies?
The FDIC’s January 2025 consumer guidance says financial experts generally recommend keeping at least six months of living expenses in a federally insured product, such as a savings account or CD. That is general guidance, not a rule that fits every household. Because CDs can impose an early-withdrawal penalty, count money in a CD toward an emergency reserve only with its access restrictions in mind. FDIC guidance on saving for the unexpected
What should I compare before opening a CD?
The CFPB recommends comparing the term, interest rate, and early-withdrawal penalty. Read the account disclosure rather than relying on the headline rate: it should explain the applicable rate, when interest is paid, the maturity date, and redemption terms. Rates and offers vary by institution and product, so these sources do not establish a current best rate. Investor.gov’s CD overview

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Access before maturity | Find out whether early withdrawal is allowed, what penalty or interest forfeiture applies, and whether redemption is restricted. |
| Maturity and renewal | Make sure the maturity date fits your expected spending date. Check whether the CD renews automatically, what terms apply at renewal, and when you can act if you do not want it to renew. |
| Rate and interest timing | Confirm the rate, whether it is fixed or variable, and when interest is paid. Compare the full terms, not only the advertised rate. |
| Product structure | Check whether the CD is callable or market-linked. A callable CD may be ended early by the bank under its contract; market-linked CDs may not allow early redemption. |
| Deposit insurance | Verify that the product is an insured deposit and account for your other deposits at the same institution and applicable ownership category. |
Will I lose money if I withdraw a CD early?
Not necessarily the amount you deposited, but you may lose interest through a penalty, depending on the contract. Do not assume every CD can be cashed out early: the FDIC notes that market-linked CDs often do not permit early redemption. Read the specific disclosure before depositing, and consider what would happen if you needed the funds sooner than planned. FDIC guidance on CD terms
How callable and market-linked CDs change the trade-off
Callable CDs
A callable CD gives the bank a contractual option to end the CD early. That is different from your own right to withdraw: check when the bank may call the CD and what happens to your principal and interest if it does.

Market-linked CDs
A market-linked CD ties its return to a market measure or formula, and its early-redemption terms may be more restrictive than those of a conventional fixed-rate CD. FDIC consumer guidance warns that these products often do not permit early redemption. Review how the return is calculated and whether you can access funds before maturity rather than treating the CD label as a guarantee of ordinary savings-account access. How deposit insurance affects your decision
The CFPB states that bank CDs are insured up to $250,000 by the FDIC and credit-union CDs up to $250,000 by the NCUA. The standard limit applies under specific ownership and institution rules; it is not a separate $250,000 allowance for each CD. Investor.gov notes that bank deposits held in the same depositor’s name at the same bank are aggregated for coverage purposes. Also verify that the product is an insured deposit, not an investment or insurance product described with similar language. The FDIC cautions that some high-yield offerings may involve entities or structures that are not federally insured. FDIC CD-shopping guidance

- List likely uses and dates. Identify bills, planned purchases, and other expenses that could require cash before a proposed CD maturity.
- Set aside accessible reserves. Keep funds for routine needs and plausible emergencies in an account with practical withdrawal access.
- Match any CD to a dated goal. Consider a CD only for money you can leave until maturity, after checking its rate, term, penalty, redemption limits, and renewal rules.
- Check coverage and institution details. Confirm federal insurance eligibility and account for existing deposits at the same institution under the relevant ownership category.
Some savers stagger CD maturity dates in a ladder so portions of their funds become available at different times. That can spread out maturity dates, but it does not guarantee immediate access to every dollar; each deposit remains subject to its own term and contract.
