At launch, Google documented it for Gemini activity and calls from favorite contacts—not as a general lamp for every text, email, or app alert. That makes it different from the traditional notification light: HiLight’s placement favors a face-down phone, and its documented cues include what Gemini is doing.
What HiLight is and where it appears
HiLight is a ring of colored LEDs built around the camera flash on the Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL; Google’s support page also lists the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. It is on the back of the phone, not on the screen or front bezel. Google describes its purpose as providing timely information without requiring you to look at the display. In practice, the rear light is intended to be visible when the phone is placed face down and its back is exposed.
Google announced HiLight on August 13, 2026, describing it as a way to “stay informed without having to look at your screen.” That is Google’s stated intended benefit, not an independent finding about how useful people will find the feature.
What makes HiLight light up
Gemini activity
Google documents different light patterns for Gemini listening, thinking, and responding. Its support article specifically describes thinking and responding. This gives HiLight an activity-feedback role alongside its notification role: it can indicate what the assistant is doing, not only that an event needs attention.

Calls from favorite contacts
HiLight can display a customizable color for calls from favorite contacts. Google says this works with Phone by Google and WhatsApp. You can choose a color for an individual by making that person a favorite, opening the contact in Contacts, and selecting HiLight under Contact Settings.
Ordinary app alerts
HiLight was not documented as a universal app-notification light at launch. In an August 23, 2026 review, Tom’s Guide reviewer Tom Pritchard reported that ordinary texts and emails did not trigger it at that time. Google’s support page currently lists Gemini and calls from favorites among the HiLight settings. Because software support can change, check the current phone settings and Google Help page rather than treating that launch-era observation as permanent.

Google’s August 13, 2026 launch announcement said favorite-contact message notifications were among the capabilities users could expect over time, but gave no rollout date. That announcement is not confirmation that the feature is available now.
How HiLight compares with traditional notification lights
| Comparison point | Pixel HiLight | Traditional notification light |
|---|---|---|
| Position and viewing angle | Rear camera area; intended to be seen when the phone is face down. | Often front-facing, so it can be visible while the display side faces the user. Placement varies by phone. |
| Documented triggers | Gemini activity and calls from favorite contacts, according to Google’s support documentation. | Varies by model and software; do not assume a particular phone supports every app or event. |
| Personalization | A color can be assigned to each favorite contact for incoming calls. | Controls vary by model; app-specific colors or patterns should be verified for the specific phone. |
| Interaction feedback | Patterns can indicate Gemini listening, thinking, or responding. | Primarily signals that an event needs attention; behavior depends on the phone. |
Google’s support instructions identify Phone by Google and WhatsApp for HiLight calls from favorites. They do not establish support for other calling apps. Likewise, there is not enough model-specific evidence here to rank HiLight against current camera-area indicators from other manufacturers or to claim it is the first, unique, or objectively better design.

How to turn on and configure HiLight
- On the Pixel, open Settings > System > HiLight.
- Enable Speaking with Gemini for Gemini activity cues, Calls from favorites for supported calls, or both.
- Update the Contacts app, mark the relevant people as favorites, then open each contact and choose HiLight under Contact Settings to assign a color.
Google notes that if flash notifications are enabled, HiLight will not display for incoming calls. In modes such as Flip to Shhh, Bedtime, or Do Not Disturb, HiLight glows by default; call behavior can be changed in the mode settings.

Which feature is a better fit?
- Choose the HiLight concept if you often leave the phone face down and want rear-facing cues for Gemini activity or calls from selected people.
- A front-facing notification light may suit you better if you want to see a light while the phone is facing up or toward you. Confirm which events and apps the specific model supports.
- Do not choose based on the assumption that HiLight covers all alerts. At launch, Google documented a narrower set of functions, and future message support had no announced date.
