Choose a satellite internet plan only after a provider confirms service at your exact home address. Then compare the full cost, busy-hour download and upload performance, latency, data rules, equipment and installation needs, and contract terms—not just the advertised monthly price. A listed plan or speed does not guarantee availability or performance at your home.
1. Confirm service at your exact address
Satellite providers do not necessarily offer every plan everywhere, and availability can depend on location or network capacity. Enter the service address with each provider and ask whether the plan is available now, whether there is a waitlist, and whether capacity limits apply. Starlink specifically says residential availability varies by region and address; its Residential plan guidance describes these plans as fixed, land-based household service.
Do this before comparing prices or treating a provider as a real option. The FCC identifies Hughes/EchoStar, SpaceX/Starlink, and Viasat among US satellite broadband providers, but that does not establish which one can serve a particular home. The FCC reported that Hughes and Starlink each had over one million US subscribers as of 2023; that dated subscriber figure says nothing about local availability or service quality. See the FCC 2024 broadband report.
2. Compare the full cost, not the headline price
Ask for a quote tied to the service address and write down what is due at signup, the regular monthly charge, and any costs that apply later. Include the equipment, installation, taxes and fees, promotion end date, and any equipment return or cancellation costs.

For reference, Starlink’s US service-plan page listed Residential 100 Mbps at $55/month, Residential 200 Mbps at $85/month, and Residential Max at $130/month when reviewed for this article. The page said the 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps offers are available only in select areas. These are listed monthly prices, not complete address-specific quotes; offers can change and other charges may apply. Check the Starlink US Service Plans page and the terms shown for your location. Comparable current prices and full cost details for Hughes/EchoStar and Viasat are not established here, so request a current quote from each provider that can serve your address.
3. Match speed and latency to how your household uses the internet
Download and upload speed
Download speed affects receiving data, such as streaming video or downloading files; upload speed affects sending it, including video calls and cloud backups. Ask providers for typical download and upload performance at your address during busy hours, and whether each advertised number is a cap, estimate, or maximum. A plan label alone does not tell you how it will perform when several people are online at once.

- AUTOMATIC SATELLITE ACQUISITION: Self-pointing portable antenna locates DISH satellites in minutes without manual pointing. Designed for RV and mobile use, the antenna locks onto signal quickly and maintains stable HD reception.
- WATCH TWO CHANNELS SIMULTANEOUSLY: Independent viewing capability allows two compatible DISH receivers to operate simultaneously. This makes it easy to watch different channels on separate TVs.
- RUGGED OUTDOOR CONSTRUCTION: Engineered for field-ready durability with a weather-resistant housing to withstand road travel and extended outdoor exposure. Compact dome design measures approximately 14.3” in diameter and 13.5” in height.
- BROAD DISH COMPATIBILITY: Works with DISH Wally and select ViP receivers for seamless integration into existing satellite setups. Compatible with pay-as-you-go programming, which is great for RVs, tailgating, and camping.
- TRUSTED U.S.-BASED DESIGN: Built on decades of Winegard technology expertise, delivering dependable performance, and U.S.-based servers for privacy and security, eliminating foreign monitoring concerns.
Starlink describes Residential 100 Mbps and Residential 200 Mbps as plans capped at their named download speeds, with upload speeds up to 15–35 Mbps. Confirm which exact offer and terms apply at your address in Starlink’s Residential plan information; those figures are plan specifications, not a guarantee of the speed a home will experience.
Latency and consistency
Latency is the time it takes data to travel between your device and a remote service. Lower latency generally makes interactive activities—such as video calls, online gaming, and remote desktop work—feel more responsive. Starlink publishes a land latency range of 25–60 ms and says some remote locations may see 100+ ms. These are published specifications, not an individual-home promise. Starlink also states that performance varies by location, time of day, and the precedence assigned to data under the service plan in its technical specifications.

- Starlink provides reliable high-speed, low-latency, internet wherever you live
- Service plan required, activate STARLINK by selecting a service plan that is customized to meet your personal needs
- Select from plans suited for households or travel
- Get online in minutes, set up STARLINK with just 2-steps, plug it in and point at the sky
- STARLINK comes with everything needed to get online including a kickstand, gen 3-router, cables and power supply
Ask what latency and busy-hour consistency a provider expects at your address, and how congestion or bad weather may affect service. Do not treat a provider’s maximum speed as an independently measured result.
4. Read the data policy beyond the word “unlimited”
“Unlimited” can describe how much data you are allowed to use without explaining how network management affects performance. Check the current plan terms for priority-data thresholds, deprioritization, speed reductions, or separate priority-data options. Ask what happens after any threshold and whether the change is temporary, lasts through a billing period, or depends on congestion.

The FCC’s 2020 notice discussed historical examples of satellite plans marketed as unlimited that could be prioritized behind other users after usage thresholds, or experience reduced speeds after data allowances. Those examples concern policies cited from 2019–2020; they are not evidence of the current terms for Starlink, Hughes/EchoStar, or Viasat. Use the notice as a reason to read today’s terms, not as a description of a current plan: FCC 20-21.
Starlink says all of its Residential plans include unlimited data. Confirm the terms for the plan and address you are considering in its Residential plan guidance, including any network-priority language relevant to your use.

5. Check equipment, installation, and sky visibility
Satellite service depends on equipment installed at your home, so check the installation details before ordering. Starlink describes its Kit as including a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount in its published specifications. Confirm the kit currently supplied, mounting options, any extra hardware needed, and whether you or an installer must set it up. Provider equipment and installation arrangements can differ.
Ask whether the proposed mounting location has the clear sky view required for service and whether trees, buildings, or other obstructions could interfere. If the provider offers an installation assessment, use it before committing to a costly mount or installation. Add all required equipment and installation costs to the comparison rather than assuming they are included in the monthly plan.
6. Review flexibility and decide whether the plan fits
Before signing up, check for a minimum term, trial period, pause option, cancellation charge, and equipment return deadline. Then evaluate the plan against the household’s actual mix of simultaneous use: video calls, streaming, large downloads, gaming, and routine browsing. Prioritize upload capacity and latency if interactive work or gaming matters; prioritize reliable busy-hour download performance if several people stream or download at once.
Use this checklist for each provider that confirms availability:
Recommended Free Tools
- Address eligibility, waitlist, or capacity limit
- Current and post-promotion monthly charges, plus signup, equipment, installation, tax, and return costs
- Typical busy-hour download and upload performance, and whether stated speeds are caps, estimates, or maximums
- Latency expectations and how congestion or weather can affect consistency
- What “unlimited” means, including priority thresholds and speed-management rules
- Required hardware, mounting, installation responsibilities, and sky-view requirements
- Contract, trial, pause, cancellation, and equipment-return terms
Choose the plan whose verified terms and likely performance fit your household—not the one with the most attractive advertised speed or lowest monthly figure in isolation.
