ShareX is the strongest free alternative for Windows 11 power users who want configurable capture, editing, recording and upload automation. For simpler screenshot markup, consider Greenshot; PicPick suits people who also want design utilities; and Snagit is built for repeatable visual documentation. But Windows 11’s built-in Snipping Tool already handles common screenshots, video snips, annotation and text extraction, so you may not need a replacement.
Do you need a Snipping Tool alternative?
Start with the built-in app if your routine is taking a region, window or full-screen screenshot, marking it up, or making a short screen recording. Microsoft also documents text extraction and quick redaction. Press Windows+Shift+S to start an image snip or Windows+Shift+R to start a video snip. The tool’s OCR actions are performed locally on the device, according to Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide.
Some extras are hardware-limited: Microsoft identifies Perfect Screenshot and Color Picker as features for Copilot+ PCs, not general Windows 11 capabilities. If you mainly need basic capture and annotation, check which features are available on your PC before installing another app.

These distinctions reflect the vendors’ published feature descriptions, not hands-on testing. The right choice depends on which tasks you repeat and how much configuration you want.

ShareX: best for configurable capture and automation
ShareX is a free, open-source Windows capture, recording, file-sharing and productivity app. Its feature list spans selected regions, active windows, monitors and scrolling pages, plus screen and GIF capture. The editor includes annotation and blur or pixelation; the app also lists OCR, QR scanning, upload destinations and configurable actions after capture.
Choose it when capture is only one step in a larger process—for example, capturing a screen, editing it and sending it to a destination through a configured workflow. Its range of features makes it a plausible power-user choice, but also means it may be more configuration than someone wanting a simple screenshot button needs.

Greenshot: best for straightforward screenshot markup
Greenshot focuses on Windows screenshots: capture a region, window or full screen, then annotate, highlight, obscure details or export the image. It is a good fit when that conventional capture-and-markup sequence matters more than a broad recording and automation toolbox.
Be careful with its scrolling-capture claim: the site names Internet Explorer. That documentation does not establish scrolling capture support in current browsers, so do not choose Greenshot on the assumption that it will capture long pages in your browser.

PicPick: best when screenshots are only part of the job
PicPick combines screenshot capture with design and measurement utilities, including a color picker, ruler and magnifier. Its listed capture features include scrolling pages and multi-monitor support; it also offers recording with system audio and microphone, editing, effects and sharing destinations.
PicPick’s site says personal, non-commercial use is free and that commercial use requires a license. The current license price is not established here, so check the vendor’s terms if you need it for work or a business.

Snagit: best for repeatable visual documentation
TechSmith Snagit is aimed at creating instructions and documentation, not just grabbing a quick screenshot. TechSmith lists scrolling capture, screen recording, redaction of sensitive information, searchable organization and step capture that generates sequential guides. It supports Windows and macOS.
If you frequently turn software screens into step-by-step material, those documentation features may matter more than a lightweight capture workflow. Check TechSmith’s current pricing and license terms directly; the reviewed product page does not establish them.

- Stay with Snipping Tool if built-in image and video capture, annotation and text actions cover your routine.
- Pick ShareX if you want a free, configurable Windows toolkit with recording, editing and post-capture or upload automation.
- Pick Greenshot if you mainly need quick Windows screenshots with markup and export.
- Pick PicPick if capture plus color, measurement and design utilities is useful, and confirm the commercial-use terms for your situation.
- Pick Snagit if you regularly create sequential guides or other visual documentation and want Windows/macOS support.
