Choose a salad spinner that fits your usual batch of greens and the space you have to store it. Prioritize an uncrowded basket, a stable base, a mechanism you can operate comfortably, and a lid that is easy to clean and dry. A larger model can suit several meal-prep portions; a compact or collapsible one may be more practical in a small kitchen.
1. Match basket capacity to your usual batch
Think about how much produce you wash at one time: one meal, several lunches, or family portions. The basket holds the greens, so its capacity matters more for washing than the bowl’s capacity. Crowding can make it harder to rinse and spin leaves effectively; Epicurious notes that tightly packed greens can trap water and grit and take longer to clean.
Keep bowl and basket measurements distinct when comparing products. OXO currently lists a 6.22-quart bowl and a 4.95-quart basket for its Good Grips Salad Spinner. Those figures describe different parts of the product, not interchangeable measures of greens capacity. Epicurious reported over six-quart capacity for the OXO it tested and 6.6 quarts for its tested Farberware model; those review figures should not be treated as a direct substitute for current manufacturer specifications.
2. Choose a mechanism you will use comfortably
Home spinners use different mechanisms, including pumps, cranks, levers, and pull cords. If you plan to spin greens often, consider whether the controls feel manageable, whether you can operate them with one hand, and whether the bowl stays put while the basket turns. A brake is useful when you want to stop the basket without waiting for it to coast to a halt.

OXO specifies a press knob, a brake, and a non-slip base on its current U.S. product page. In its review, Epicurious valued easy operation and a working brake; it also described the tested Farberware pump as easy to use one-handed and noted its stable rubber ring. These are practical examples, not proof that one mechanism is best for every user.
3. Read drying results as test-specific evidence
A spinner removes surface water after washing, but published results depend on the model, produce, load, and test method. Food Network reported that its tested 6.22-quart OXO left 17 percent residual moisture after about 20 seconds of spinning two cups of spring mix. That result describes that particular test, not a guaranteed outcome for another load or a universal performance figure for salad spinners.

When comparing reviews, check what greens were used, how much was loaded, and how long the spinner ran. Results from different reviewers are not necessarily comparable if those conditions differ.
4. Check how the lid and basket clean and dry
Look at how easily the basket rinses and whether the lid opens or comes apart enough to clean its crevices. Moisture can remain in hard-to-reach areas, so a thoughtful dry-out routine matters as much as the initial rinse. Epicurious recommends thorough air drying and notes that inaccessible lid crevices can be troublesome.

OXO says its lid comes apart and that the spinner is dishwasher-safe. That can simplify cleanup, but check which components the manufacturer says are dishwasher-safe and how they should be reassembled. Epicurious described the Farberware it tested as hand-wash-only and raised concerns about its thinner bowl; those are observations from that review rather than independently verified current specifications.
5. Balance storage, material, and extra uses
Measure your cupboard or shelf before choosing a larger spinner: the bowl and lid can take up substantial space. A collapsible model may be easier to store in a small kitchen, but Epicurious found trade-offs in capacity and sturdiness in the collapsible model it tested.

Glass or stainless-steel spinners may double as serving bowls, but weigh that convenience against the product’s weight, cost, and storage footprint. A larger bowl is not automatically the better choice if it is awkward to store or more than your routine requires.

- Basket capacity suits the batch you typically wash without crowding leaves.
- The mechanism feels comfortable, and the base stays stable during use.
- A brake is available if you value a quick stop.
- The lid and basket are accessible enough to rinse, clean, and dry thoroughly.
