To export a Photoshop document as a PNG at a specific size, set the required pixel dimensions in Image > Image Size if the image itself needs resizing, then use File > Export > Export As to choose PNG and confirm the final dimensions. For screen graphics, the pixel width and height determine the delivered size; PPI metadata does not add pixels or change how the image appears on screen.
Start with the required pixel dimensions
Before resizing, get the destination’s required width and height in pixels. Use the website, app, client, or printer’s specification rather than assuming a standard size. Adobe defines pixel dimensions as the total pixel count expressed as width × height; for example, a 3000 × 2000 image contains 6 million pixels. Adobe’s Photoshop image-size guide explains the relationship between pixel dimensions, resolution, and resampling.
If the requirement gives only a physical print size, ask the printer what PPI to use, then calculate each pixel dimension as physical size in inches × PPI. Adobe describes 300 PPI as typical for best-quality professional printing and 72–96 PPI as typical for screen and web images, but these are general guidelines, not universal requirements for every printer or platform.
Resize the image only when its pixel count must change
- In Photoshop, choose Image > Image Size.
- Enter the target width and height. Keep the proportions linked if you need to preserve the image’s aspect ratio.
- Enable Resample when you need to change the actual number of pixels. If you are changing only print dimensions or PPI without changing pixel dimensions, leave it off.
- Review the result and confirm the dimensions before continuing.
Changing PPI alone does not make a screen PNG larger or more detailed. Without resampling, the pixel count stays the same while the physical print size associated with those pixels changes. Adobe’s example: a 1000 × 1000-pixel image corresponds to about 13.9 × 13.9 inches at 72 PPI, or 3.3 × 3.3 inches at 300 PPI.

Resampling changes the pixel grid. Downsampling discards pixels; upsampling estimates new ones and cannot restore fine detail that was not present in the original. For reductions, Photoshop offers methods such as Bicubic Sharper; for hard-edged illustrations, Nearest Neighbor may be worth considering. These are resampling options, not guarantees of a particular result. See Adobe’s Image Size and resizing documentation for the available controls.
Export the PNG and check the output dimensions
- Choose File > Export > Export As.
- Select PNG as the format.
- Set or confirm the width and height in the export controls. Photoshop links them proportionately by default; use the preview and asset-list dimensions to verify the result.
- Choose whether the PNG needs transparency. Adobe documents transparency as a 32-bit option; the Smaller File option produces 8-bit assets. With both options unchecked, Export As generates 24-bit assets.
- Choose the appropriate color handling. Export As provides options to convert to sRGB and embed the color profile; follow the receiving platform or printer’s requirements.
- Export the PNG as a separate delivery file, keeping the layered PSD as the editable source.
Export As also includes scale and resampling controls, and its physical-resolution metadata is included in the exported image. The image scale and canvas bounds are different: scaling changes the image dimensions, while canvas size sets the outer boundary. An undersized canvas clips content; a larger canvas adds surrounding space according to the document and background. If the deliverable must occupy a fixed bounding box, use Canvas Size as appropriate and verify the resulting asset dimensions. See Adobe’s Export As guide for the documented export options.

Export several sizes or repeat a known export
Make multiple scale variants
For several deliverables from one document, use File > Export > Export As and add relative-size rows, such as 1.25x, with filename suffixes. Export the required layers, artboards, or document, then verify the pixel dimensions of every variant. Adobe’s Export As documentation covers multiple-size export.
Reuse Quick Export settings
For recurring exports, configure Quick Export as in Photoshop’s preferences. Adobe documents settings for PNG format, transparency and smaller-file options, destination, metadata, and color-space handling. Quick Export can export the whole document or selected layers. Check these details before delivery
- Pixel dimensions: Do the exported width and height match the destination specification?
- Aspect ratio and crop: If the target ratio differs from the PSD, decide whether to crop or add canvas. Do not stretch the image unless distortion is acceptable.
- Canvas bounds: Does the requirement describe the image itself or the full bounding box, including surrounding space?
- Transparency: Does the receiving destination need a transparent background?
- Print output: If a physical size matters, are the pixel dimensions and PPI appropriate for the printer’s specification?
- Color profile: Does the destination require sRGB conversion or an embedded profile?
- Source file: Is the editable PSD preserved separately from the exported PNG?
