If your small solar-powered car won’t move, first test it in direct sunlight with the panel facing the sun and the wheels lifted off the ground. If the motor does not spin, check the light and electrical connections. If the motor spins but the wheels do not, look for a jammed axle, gears that are not meshing, or an assembly problem.
1. Test the car in strong, direct sunlight
Move the car out of shade and aim its panel toward the sun. Shade, cloud cover, or a panel facing away from the sun may leave it without enough power to start the motor. A bright indoor room is not a reliable substitute for direct sunlight. Science Buddies recommends testing in direct sunlight on a sunny day with the panel facing the sun.
Lift the car so the wheels can turn freely while you observe it. This separates a power or drivetrain problem from resistance caused by the floor.
2. Check whether the motor spins
Watch the motor or its shaft while the car is in direct sunlight. That observation tells you which part of the car to inspect next.

If the motor does not spin
Check the wiring against the instructions for your exact car. Make sure the panel wires are firmly attached to the motor, and look for loose or broken connections. Also check that wires are not touching or crossing in a way that could create a short. Pro’sKit’s GE-617 support guidance identifies adequate sunlight, correct connections, and short circuits as troubleshooting points; Science Buddies likewise recommends checking and repairing loose or broken connections.
If a wire or contact is hot, melted, or visibly damaged, stop using the car until the fault is corrected. Pro’sKit warns that a short can generate enough heat to melt contact points. Follow the product manual, and ask an adult or a qualified person for help if you are unsure how to inspect or repair the wiring.

If the motor spins
Move to the mechanical parts. With the car lifted, turn a wheel gently by hand and check whether the axle moves freely. Look for debris or anything jamming the axle or transmission.
If the motor shaft turns but the axle does not, inspect the gears. Their teeth need to engage; if they miss each other, the motor can run without driving the wheels. Science Buddies recommends realigning the motor or axle so the gears mesh correctly.

3. Check the assembly for friction or a missed connection
If the axle is not jammed and the gears appear to engage, compare the assembled car with its instructions. A part in the wrong position can prevent the drivetrain from working. Pro’sKit also notes that plastic burrs left incompletely trimmed can make a toy run roughly. Remove or adjust parts only as the kit instructions allow.

Solar-car kits can differ in their wiring, parts, and assembly. Because the car’s model is not specified, do not assume its required voltage, polarity, battery or capacitor arrangement, replacement parts, or wiring changes. Consult the manual for that exact model or contact its manufacturer. General checks can help identify whether the problem is light, wiring, or the drivetrain, but they do not establish which replacement components will fit a particular car.
